Moldovan netizens were quick to remind Recean that in 2013, the "pro-European government" of Vlad Filat of which Recean was a part of, ceded the Chisinau airport to a Russian company.
Although in 2020 the contract was repealed Moldova has yet to take actual steps to place the airport back into the hands of the Moldovan state, the airport remaining in legal limbo.

🇷🇴🌹—🇷🇴📰 ProTV | Social Democratic MP, Alin Chirilă, suggested that Romania cut off all aid and passage to Ukraine until it begins respecting the international conventions established to protect the Danube Delta wetlands.
At least this was what was written in the original post. Little time after it was published on Facebook, the message was edited with "cut off the aid" being eliminated and instead suggesting that Romania should block Ukraine EU membership access until it conforms to the international conventions in place.
Chirilă referred to Ukraine's undertaking as an "insult" to Romania adding that "such a country has no place in the EU [...]. We here in the EU respect our neighbours and honor our commitments european or international. Ukraine has yet to grasp this concept" ended the social democrat.
Leader of the Social Democratic Party, Marcel Ciolacu, announced that he will meet on February 24th with the Ukrainian ambassador to talk about the matter. Yesterday in Parliament, the social democrat explained that current EU and international conventions have established that the only navigable part of the Danube Delta is the Sulina branch entirely owned by Romania. The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry made an exception to the rule specifically for Ukraine which granted Romania's approval to allow ships of no more than 3.5 meters of draught to the ship's hull. This limit was broken by Ukraine with ships having a 7 meter draught to the ship's hull being able to traverse the Chilia branch.

He did not go further into details only mentioning that lethal aid is out of the question and that these experts will stay between 1 to 2 years to reform Moldova’s security system.
He expressed that the EU does not wish to get to the point when Russia invades Moldova and will do everything to prevent the scenario.

🇷🇴🌾⚠️ Romanian Minister of Agriculture, Petre Daea, revealed that Romania went from a net exporter of grain to a net importer.
He cited as reason the war in Ukraine which made Romanian grain impossible to compete with cheap Ukrainian grain which, rather than go for Africa, went to Western Europe and also found a good amount of Romanian customers.
The minister said that the situation is “delicate”. Most farmers have their barns and storages full of grain and with little money in their bank accounts generating fears about the future of Romanian agriculture for 2023 and onwards. While he did not say directly, he suggested that the Romanian farmers were failed directly by the state, as a result, the farmers couldn’t sell their produce neither to international buyers nor national buyers.
Out of 4.5–5 million tons of grain ready for export, only 2 million were exported. The minister stressed however that this does not pose a risk of famine. Daea stated that Romania together with Poland, Czechia, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia have requested that the EU grant financial aid to farmers to prevent the scenario where Romanian agriculture collapses.

🇪🇺⁉️🇷🇴🇺🇦 The EU Commission released a statement saying that they are up to date with the developments in the Romanian press regarding the Bystroye Canal. It also said that the EU was not informed by Ukraine regarding its activities in the area adding that it will request clarifications.
The Commission also said that where Ukraine is digging does not comply with the Trans European Transportation Network’s conditions.
According to a Ukrainian ordinance given in February of 2022, Ukraine considers the Chilia branch, shared with Romania, as an internal navigable channel and it has planned to deepen the canal to at least 8.23 meters. According to the latest measurements, Ukraine had deepened the canal up to 7 meters.
Ukraine also plans to build a grain terminal in the port of Izmail and the deepening of the canal would help increase grain exports.

February 15 the Romanian public and government became aware of new digging in the channel despite it being outlawed in the 2010 Espoo Convention, when Transportation Minister, Sorin Grindeanu, discloses the information during a press conference.
February 16 the Romanian MFA expresses its disapproval with Ukraine, it could not confirm that any digging had taken place.
Deputy General Secretary of NATO, Mircea Geoană, warns Ukraine (the post has its own summary of events) to not do something that would break Romania’s spirit of solidarity with Ukraine.

🇷🇴❌🇺🇦 The Bystroye Channel dispute is just another event in a centuries long series of fights over control of the Danube's mouths and the lucrative shipping that comes and goes with it. Part 2/2
In 1940, Romania cedes Bessarabia to the USSR as part of its June 26th Ultimatum and the USSR has a border on the Danube again. The Soviets notified Bucharest that they wished to mark the new borders. The talks were difficult for Romania as the USSR disputed the old border between 1878 and 1918 on the Chilia branch's thalweg, refusing to share the waterway with Romania. After talks began to stall, the Soviet Union invaded Romania once more by occupying several islands in the Chilia branch and Snake Island in the Black Sea, causing the deaths of 6 Romanian soldiers.
After this small invasion, the Romanian government tacitly accepted the new borders. In June of 1941, Russian troops would be expelled, only to return in 1944 occupying those islands as well. In the 1947 Treaty of Paris, it was established that the Romanian—Soviet border will be the one in use in June of 1940, meaning that the USSR had to cede to Romania about 24 km2 of land. It would return just two of the islands, the Tătaru Mare and Cernofcăi islands in the Chilia Branch the rest remaining occupied. In 1948 and in 1961 communist leader, Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej would sign some accords recognising the border as it was but it did so without the approval of the National Grand Assembly, thus rendering the accords void, with the 1947 Treaty of Paris still retaining effect.
Only through the "Friendship Treaty of 1997" between Romania and Ukraine would the unofficial border become de-jure legal, thus Romania ceding its claims to 5 islands, retaining control over 1 (Tătaru Mare) and keeping a dispute over Maican island. Part of the dispute was settled in the Hague at the International Court which awarded Romania 9700 km2 of territorial waters and exclusive economic zone (EEZ) with Ukraine receiving 2300 km2 and getting to keep Snake Island.
The alluvium deposited by the Danube usually is the main factor in drawing the border between the two neighbours. It also didn't help that the Chilia branch is shallow, dangerous for heavy vessels and that the only navigable branch is the Sulina branch fully owned by Romania and with no possibility to contest the ownership. Therefore, to circumvent the tolls on the Sulina channel (it was blocked from 1991 until 2004 by a deliberate (?) sinking in the channel's narrowest point), and create a deeper canal, Ukraine begun digging the Bystroye canal ahead of the grand reopening of the Sulina canal. Only after threats of sanctions from the United States and the EU, Ukraine set aside its plans to dig the canal to an adequate depth and signed the 2010 Espoo Convention with Romania, a convention it respected... until likely, August of 2022 when it begun to dig again.
Deepening of the Bystroye canal would cause the Danube's flow to go only through the Chilia—Bystroye branches which would leave no room for the Danube's two other branches. Romania threatened back in 2004 to dig a canal of its own to divert water but the plan never materialised. The 2010s were damaging to the Delta as it was marked by long droughts which saw the Danube's volume reach record lows. There are well founded fears that with a low flow of water combined with a deepening of the Chilia branch which carries most of the water, the other two branches will become devoid of water and cause an ecological disaster and huge losses in revenue for Romania, which will now have to share the Chilia—Bystroye canal with Ukraine as the only navigable waterway left.

🇷🇴❌🇺🇦 The Bystroye Channel dispute is just another event in a centuries long series of fights over control of the Danube's mouths and the lucrative shipping that comes and goes with it. Part 1/2
The fight for control over the Danube's mouths date back to the Roman and Byzantine Empires that used the Danube to protect their empire's borders. During the late Middle Ages, there were several fortified towns in and around the Danube's Delta with strong competition between the Genovese, Venetians and Greeks to maintain control over them and the trade routes. Some ruins of these old fortresses can be viewed to this day although most remain unexcavated.
Beginning in the late 14th century, the Danube Delta comes for the first time under Wallachian control when Domnitor and Voevoda, Mircea the Elder, is granted the Despotate of Dobruja in 1389. After 1402, intermitent control over the fortresses of Chilia and Licostomo (modern-day Vilkovo) change hands multiple times between Wallachian and Moldavian rulers, but in 1428 it falls definitely under Moldavia and remains a part of the Principality until 1484 when the Ottomans finally conquer it.
Fast-forward to the 19th century, Ottoman rule is weak over the Romanian Principalities. After the 1829 Treaty of Adrianople, Russia firmly establishes itself into the Romanian Principalities and moves the ages old border from the Romanian side to the Thalweg of the Danube and gained access to the Danube Delta. The Crimean War would revert these gains as Russia would lose access to the Danube Delta but the Danube itself will become "internationalised" as the Danube Commission was setup to protect the commercial routes passing through the Danube from the abuses of certain states. Austria and Great Britain were now competing with Russia and the Turks over control of the Danube and the shipping lanes it provided.
Soon, Romania would gain access to the Commission after the 1878 Treaty of Berlin, replacing the Ottomans, as, after all, it was residing in the riverside port of Galați/Galatz. Another consequence of the 1878 Treaty of Berlin was that Russia had gained once more a border on the Danube river, the Chilia branch again but this time, it was bordering Romania. The treaty placed the border on the Thalweg of the river, the deepest point of the Danube right in the middle but this was contested by the Russians with a perpetual state of tension existing up until 1918 when Romania assumed full control of the Delta after the union with Bessarabia. It was not until 1938 when the Great Powers of Great Britain and France would acknowledge the full authority of Romania over the Danube's mouth when the Danube Commission was handed over to Romanian authorities.

Back to the coup attempts, the Russian embassy in Moldova employs around 1500 people, just as much as the Moldovan Intelligence Services (SIS) currently employ. The Russian embassy in Chisinau is a spy fortress on NATO's borders. It routinely uses corrupt Moldovan politicians to further Russian interests, when the time is right. The changes are carried out by Moldovan politicians, with Russian money.
After Maia Sandu took over, the justice in Moldova has become increasingly one-sided risking to cause further division among Moldovans, risking to amplify social tensions and break the unity of the population.
Maia Sandu allied herself with Igor Dodon, with Renato Ușatîi, with Vasile Andrei Năstase, she did everything to advance her political career. Sandu is known in Moldovan politics to be a vengeful character that destroys her former friends allies, especially her political allies. Năstase, Dodon and Ușatîi have either left politics or are about to despite holding near complete power just a few years ago. Another sign of Maia Sandu's vengeance could be that her former and loyal PM, Natalia Gavrilița has so far not been confirmed to have received any new position inside the government, ministries or presidential administration further supporting the theory that Gavrilița was removed because she was making Sandu look bad. One more example is the recent news that Spînu is finally investigated by prosecutors regarding the extremely unpopular contract with the Moldavskaya GRES in Transnistria which caused Sandu's popularity to dip.
The justice system in Moldova has been weaponised by Maia Sandu and she uses it with great effect against her political opponents. This would be great if the /PAS/ administration wasn't more corrupt than the previous governments.
Mihai Eminescu [National poet of Romania and Moldova] once said: "The mistakes made by the politician should always be considered crimes as in their wake, millions suffer, the growth of the nation is hampered and her future is stolen, set on the wrong path for years to come". Moldovans have had over the course of recent history governments that have made mistakes that cost Moldova billions, hampered its growth and set it on a path of continuous decline.

[...] The plan [the so-called coup attempts orchestrated by Russia] set up by Maia Sandu is looking like a smoke bomb intended to give pretext to increase the powers of the intelligence services and the procuracy that are now tasked with keeping Sandu in power "at all costs", the new "super" president of Moldova managing to have her own government and parliament with which she's destroying Moldovan democracy.
At the same time, voices have begun to appear that oppose Maia Sandu's increasingly authoritarian rule, voices from her own entourage. Sandu began her career in the Ministry of the Economy under former presidents, Petru Lucinschi and Vladimir Voronin, two pro-Russian politicians. She was promoted by pro-Western premier, Vlad Filat kicking off her political career.
A close contact of Maia Sandu and senior member of /PAS/ is Andrei Spînu, colloquially known as "The Offshore Secretary" for the high number of allegations involving financial crimes. Inside /PAS/, Spînu is known as "the moneyman" and as Maia Sandu's personal piggybank. Despite the numerous shady deals of Spînu, he has avoided prosecution as any prosecutor that attempts to do so, risks losing his job.
Once /PAS/ won the elections, Andrei Spînu, needed to get repaid as he was one of /PAS/'s greatest financiers. He greatly enriched himself after coming into power forcing Moldovan citizens to endure high energy and electricity bills. Spînu also signed various contracts with Gazprom president, Alexei Miller, for which many bribes were given/taken and yet, the justice in Chisinau remains unaware of such events but it doesn't matter as long as Maia Sandu receives international praise for her anti-Russian statements.
While Maia Sandu is supposedly "anti-Russian" she has met extensively with one of Putin's advisors, Dmitry Kozak. Moldova continues to be a member of the CIS while claiming that it wants EU membership. Sandu is yet another president that has failed to implement the 2013 decision of the Moldovan Constitutional Court which declared that article 13 of the Constitution regarding the official language of Moldova is to be modified to state "Romanian" not "Moldovan" as official language. This small detail has contributed into creating a false separation of the Romance-speaking population of Moldova into Moldovans and Romanians, the latter being a minority.
Sandu still has not acted to return the properties of the old Metropolis of Bessarabia which were abusively seized by the Soviet regime more than 80 years ago despite being asked to by the Romanian Patriarch himself. Now the question arises, how much of a "Romanian" is Maia Sandu, the same Sandu some naive optimists envision as a president of Moldova and Romania in 2024?

🟥🟩🟥❓🤝🇷🇺 According to Bloknot, tomorrow, February 21st, when Russian president, Vladimir Putin is supposed to hold a speech in front of the State Duma, there are speculations that the address will be marked by new territorial additions to the Russian Federation, as so far, it was confirmed that the presidents of Abkhazia and South Ossetia will participate.
There are also rumours that the president of Transnistria, Vadym Krasnoselsky will also join the address but online. If it happens, it will be unprecedented as the Russian president, never displayed himself publicly with any Transnistrian leader, not even online, suggesting that Russia will either recognise the independence of Transnistria or outright annex it or plan a referendum to join Russia like it organised in the Kherson, Zaporozhe, Donetsk and Lugansk oblasts of Ukraine.
Admin's speculation: perhaps we might even see Găgăuzia mentioned. In 2014 simultaneously with the annexation of Crimea, the war in Donbas and the unrest in Odessa and Kharkov an illegal referendum took place in Găgăuzia where supposedly, the locals voted to join Russia. With the benefit of hindsight, Russia planned to reach Găgăuzia even earlier than 2014 and coerce Moldova to give in to Russian interests as, at the time, Moldova was governed by a pro-Western government. Russia clearly has not given up on this goal. It prepared the territory for an eventual invasion, almost 9 years ago and the Gagauzian authorities are constantly repeating tropes of "discrimination" under Chisinau.

🇷🇴❌🇺🇦 Romanian PM, Nicolae Ciucă, summoned the Ukrainian ambassador requesting that Romanian officials be allowed to inspect the works on the Bystroye channel to confirm or infirm if the channel was actually deepened disregarding the 2010 Espoo Convention and other accords reached by Romanian and Ukrainian authorities.
The PM added that the officials will measure the depth of the channel saying that "maintenance dredging cannot exceed a depth of more than 3.5 meters. If the 3.5 meter depth limit was surpassed, that is not maintenance, that is a deepening of the channel".
"The impact of the deepening can be assessed only after the depth was measured". He ended his official statement by saying that Romania will challenge this breach of international law to the highest authorities including by notifying the EU Commission.
Minister of the Environment, Tanczos Barna, released a video reaffirming that his ministry will do everything to prevent any changes that could impact the fragile ecosystem of the Danube Delta reiterating that Romania and Ukraine are tied to by the Espoo Convention to not carry out activities that could endanger the Delta. He ended his statement by saying that he's confident that the two countries will solve their disputes.

Whenever pro-Russian sources mention that the Romanian army is waiting to attack Transnistria, just know that its their usual alarmism/paranoia intended to stir up war support. There will be no attack on Transnistria. Both Romania and Moldova don't have the courage to do it.
Romania couldn't even protect its own interests in the Danube Delta, it wasn't able to spot Ukrainian ships digging literally over the border. Romania or at least the Romanian government probably never intended to integrate Moldova in the first place, it just so happened to be that the war came along and other external factors put pressure on Bucharest to act after 33 years of neglecting the Romanians in Bessarabia. This is also observable to the way Romanian authorities treat Moldova.
Unionism is still very much confined to the nationalist space in Romanian society, definitely not present in the higher echelons of politics and government. What is present there though, its the "great" and "marvelous" European integration of Moldova because only Ukrainian nationalism is cool, Romanian nationalism is taboo. Waiting for Moldova to finish the EU application process, which wholly depends on how the war in Ukraine evolves as Russian politicians made it clear that their next goal after Ukraine is Moldova, is frankly, stupid, compared to the other option, union, which would make this process instantaneous, as Moldova would not need to synchronise its justice system, government, laws and other bodies with EU standards by uniting, it would inherently adopt Romanian laws which are up to EU standards and the task of integrating the region into the wider Romanian society will become Bucharest's focus, integration which has been happening slowly ever since Moldova gained independence.
Seemingly none in the government have ever thought of this option despite it being in their own interests, perhaps afraid of falling out of grace with their Western partners or perhaps because that would mean to give in to the nationalist segments of society and fulfill one of their longstanding goals not on the geopolitical aspect but on the historic and ethnic aspect.

⚡️🇲🇩🇺🇦 Disturbing news arrives from Transnistria:
The most prepared units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are gathering at the border. Moldovan politicians openly call for an attack on Tiraspol.
In the military sense, an attack is possible immediately from the territory of Ukraine and Romania, where the Americans formed a special division this summer. Plus the Romanian army itself.
Another worrying factor is the change of government in Moldova.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that about 200,000 Russian citizens live in Transnistria, for which Russia is naturally responsible. And the 14th Army was disbanded back in 1995. The armed forces in Transnistria are very few and spread over a fairly large territory.
There are huge warehouses with ammunition that are of interest to the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Of course, warehouses can be blown up in the event of a threat.

🇲🇩❌🟥🟩🟥 The new Moldovan Minister of Energy, Victor Parlicov, has stated that Chisinau will look to renegotiate the terms of the contract signed with the Moldavskaya GRES.
The contract signed last December, is due to expire in March and was almost entirely negotiated by former deputy PM, Andrei Spînu and quickly became extremely unpopular with Moldovans as the contract was a worse deal than what Chisinau had negotiated before.
Last week it was revealed that Spînu is being investigated over the deal he signed last December.

🇺🇦🖕🇷🇴—🇷🇴📰 Digi24 | The Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure has publicly stated that the Bystroye Channel was deepened to 6.5 meters from 3.9 meters at the beginning of the war.
6.5 meters is still shy of the 8 meter goal set out by Ukraine. The Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure proudly states that the project represents an "opportunity to increase the capacity of the Danube and to increase the exports of the ports on the Danube. We are continuing to develop the cluster of Danubian ports alongside our European partners".
This message was posted a day before the Ukrainian Embassy sought to infirm rumours that Ukraine was actually deepening the Bystroye Channel claiming it was "maintenance works seeking to prevent the silting of the channel". If anything, this proves that anything that comes from the mouths of Ukrainian official sources cannot be trusted.
According to the port of Izmail, the channel beginning at the Bystroye mouth up to the place where it meets the Chilia Branch has a depth of 6.5 meters and from that point onwards to the port of Izmail, it has a 7 meter depth. At the beginning of the war, the depth across the Chilia Branch and the Bystroye subbranch were at approximately 3.9 meters.
The Ministry also proudly states that the "removal of the alluvium was carried out as part of the EU "Solidarity Lanes" program designed to develop alternative routes for Ukrainian shipping". It continues by claiming that "the ports of Reni, Izmail and Ust-Dunavtsi have had a threefold increase in their export capacity since last year with 17 million tons of goods being exported 11 million of which were foodstuffs".
"We managed to increase the draft of a ship's hull for the first time since independence. As a result we will be able to secure safe maritime passage between the Black Sea and the Danube river. We thank our European partners which contributed to the Solidarity Lanes program [...] All of the work is carried out with the approval of the EU Commission, Romania and the Danube Commission. The latter is the international body tasked with assuring the safe passage of vessels on the Danube river" ended the statement.
Romanian FM, Bogdan Aurescu, requested during the Munich Security Conference that Ukraine clarify what is going on the Bystroye Channel, claiming that the Romanian MFA cannot verify in the field the information in the public space. After the meeting, the Ukrainian embassy released its beforementioned statement, which denied any non-maintenance works taking place on the canal affirming that "major works in the area will be carried out after informing the Romanian side".

A total of 5214 cases of foreign citizens overstayed their visas. Out of these 875 were deported with 4303 others leaving on their own accord, a 201% increase from 2021.

🇺🇦🖕🇷🇴—🇷🇴🗞 Știripesurse | While the Ukrainian embassy says the dredging works on the Bystroye channel are "just for maintenance" and that they've begun "last August", advisor to the Ukrainian president, Mykhailo Podolyak says that the works reported initially by the Romanian Ministry of Transportation without the knowledge of the rest of the Romanian government are in fact real.
Podolyak said: "I think now there are other priorities. We are at war. These debates over the environment of the Danube Delta can take place between the ministries of our respective countries to find the best solutions [...] On our first order of the day we have: the war, the constant need of ammunition and then other aspects related to the regional environment".
In the meantime, Social Democratic MEP, Victor Negrescu, sent a notice to the EU Commission asking it if it support the current works on the Bystroye Channel. So far no answer has been given.
To summarise the series of posts regarding the flare up in the Bystroye dispute:
⚫️ Ukraine begins dredging works to deepen the canal lying by saying its for "maintenance" seeking to increase its influence of the Danube's mouth but also for a safer route for its commercial input and output despite the fact that the Zatoka railway bridge was hit by a Russian UUV a few days ago and it continues to remain vulnerable to such attacks making the transport route from Izmail to Odessa incredibly risky and inefficient.

⚫️ At this point, the Romanian government and press were confused as Minister of Transportation, Sorin Grindeanu, first breaks the news saying Ukraine is dredging the canal with other ministries and agencies infirming the news saying "we were not notified".
⚫️ The notice sent by the EU to Romania was asking it if it agrees with what Ukraine was doing to which the Romanian MFA responds by firmly stating that it does not.

The particular segment of the Munich Security Forum was called "Beyond NATO: Partnerships for European security". The speakers included Moldovan president, Maia Sandu, and General Secretary of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.
The Moldovan president made clear that support for NATO in Moldova will not increase any time soon but that Moldova still needs to increase her defense capabilities somehow and the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, agreed saying he "respects and understands" Moldova's problem and called on the members of the defensive alliance to lend support to Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine, all which are prevented from obtaining NATO membership.

🇺🇦❔🇷🇴 —🇷🇴📰 HotNews | The Ukrainian embassy in Bucharest claims it notified the Administration of the Danube Delta Reservation last August regarding usual dredging works on the Bystroye channel which only serve to remove the silting that occurs naturally preventing even small ships designed for shallow waters from navigating the waterway.
The Embassy also states that in case of any intent on the Ukrainian side to carry out other types of work on the channel, it will send a notice in advance to the Romanian side informing it and that if any type of other work on the channel is to be carried out it will not go against international law.
The Ukrainian Embassy ends its statement by thanking Romania for its unwavering support and pledges to keep open a transparent and continuous flow of information "in order to not further Russian propaganda".
When Ukraine first began digging the Bystroye Channel in 2004, it failed to send to the Romanian side the plans for the canal until 2007 a few months before the canal was officially opened despite protests from the EU, Romania, the US, the UN and various environmental protection NGOs.

⬛️ Right now, its too early to say what is happening in the Delta as there is a lot of confusion the state of things in the Danube Delta. While the body tasked with administrating the Danube Delta is reporting that it did not receive a notice from Ukraine regarding new works on the waterways, the Ministry of Transportation contradicts it, but only for it to point out that it is not its responsibility to take care of the Delta. Apparently, the Romanian MFA did not know about this until the press started publishing articles, or it was not informed by the External Information Services (SIE) specifically tasked with monitoring foreign developments.

⬛️ The Bystroye Canal received immense criticism from the World Wildlife Fund, the US, the EU at the time all citing the disastrous impacts on the environment but Ukraine went through with it anyway breaking the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context of which is a signatory and the Ramsar Convention on protecting wetlands. How do we know of the impact dredging can have on the environment? The Sulina Branch was dredged before, beginning in the 19th century with the first Danube Commission founded after the Crimean War to protect maritime shipping and travel on the Danube. It first dredged the Sulina branch turning it into a canal, significantly reducing its length making faster travel times possible. Although not studied at the time, much later it was concluded that the dredging and shortening of the branch by cutting through the meanders of the Danube change the breeding patterns of fish, birds and mammals. It also rearranged entire ecosystems.
⬛️ Unlike the last time, this dredging and expansion risks to permanently destroy these ecosystems and kill a navigable waterway extremely important for Romania.
⬛️ Therefore, when the news broke of another attempt to dredge and deepen the Bystroye canal, Romanian netizens were furious and the government reacted to the news swiftly despite being taken by surprise as Ukraine did not send a notice to Romania regarding its intents with the canal.
⬛️ Now, there are conflicting claims regarding whether or not Ukrainian authorities are actually working on dredging the canal, now with another excuse, the Russian invasion hampering grain exports and other imports, (despite the fact that Romania repaired an old Soviet gauge railway near the port city of Galați early in the war to help with this exact goal in mind and that Ukrainian goods are overcrowding Constanța Port), Ukraine has set out to finish what it begun.
⬛️ The first reaction, that of Transportation Minister, Sorin Grindeanu, is included here, the Romanian MFA's strong opposition to the project is here. Since then, Minister of the Environment, Tanczos Barna, added that both Romanian and Ukrainian legislation prohibit any manmade works inside the Danube Delta natural reservations that would endanger the biodiversity of the area, basically reaffirming that there is no way Romania would ever agree to a deepening of the Chilia branch. Lastly, Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoană, went on TV to say about the Bystroye dredging works and the plight of the Romanian minority this: "I can say that the help of the allies, including Romania, was remarkable and here we find ourselves, a year later, after Romania took in over 3 million refugees [...] therefore, if we want to keep this unity, its the duty and in the interest of Ukraine to make sure it keeps this unity among the Western nations which are working hard to help her, militarily, economically and humanitarianly. It is one thing to "Derussify" Ukraine and another thing to disregard the issues faced by the other minorities and I hope that Bucharest's message is that every party involved is making sure there are no things involved that could break the spirit of solidarity with Ukraine".

🇺🇦❌🇷🇴 Ukraine's diplomatic relations with Romania are about to take a nosedive as a result of Kiev's arrogance. The story of Romania and Ukraine's fight over the Danube Delta and the maritime traffic of the area. Part 1/3
⬛️ Considering how the Romanian government learnt of the renewed attempts to dredge and deepen the Bystroye and Chilia canals, that is to be told so by the EU Commission, asking to see if Romania was ready to give the go like it was something of little importance. In fact its extremely important.
⬛️ The Danube Delta is inhabited by under 15k people, majority Romanian with a 10% Lipovan minority, which rely on the fish of the Delta for they existence. Each year in the summer, the Delta's population triples as tourists both local and foreign, flock to visit one of the most unique places in Europe. This represents a significant income for the locals which depend a lot on tourism.
⬛️ There are well founded fears in the local community that the Delta could one day dry up, mainly related to the significant damming of the Danube which causes significant drops in volume of water passing through the Delta especially in the summer, the last few summers being particularly dry causing extended droughts. Romanian researchers studying the Danube Delta already note significant decreases in the Sfântu Gheorghe (Saint George) and Sulina branches, the latter being open for large vessels, not because of Ukraine dredging the canals but as a result of several years of long droughts. The Chilia Branch already transports 60% of the Danube's flow, deepening it would only serve to transport more water depriving the other two branches which would effectively end the Delta and the wetlands and alongside it, the 360 species of birds, 45 species of fish that call it home would disappear.
⬛️ Destroying the Delta would also affect Ukraine, although not as much. Why would Ukraine be willing to destroy a UNESCO World Heritage Site breaking two (three) international conventions it signed regarding the protection of the Danube Delta? For economic reasons.
⬛️ Ukraine had its own deep water canal in the Delta, it was called the Prorva channel but due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and neglect on behalf of Kiev, it became silted and impossible for large vessels to navigate it. As a result the only canal left that was navigable for deep water vessels was the Sulina branch, the shortest of the three branches or the more expensive option, the Danube-Black Sea Channel, entirely controlled by Romania, which added additional taxes to Ukrainian merchant shipping. As dredging the Prorva channel would cost too much and require a lot of effort, Ukraine set out to build the Bystroye canal but not before an interesting event happened. In September of 1991, an East-German ship under Ukrainian flag, the Rostock, sank in the Sulina canal, effectively blocking it for transport for 14 years. In the process of setting free the ship, 3 divers unfortunately died, a flooding of the ship's reservoirs caused a spillover of fuel which polluted the area. The ship had to be cut in pieces and it was removed this way, the last piece being pulled out of the canal in November of 2005.
⬛️ Ukraine had announced plans for the Bystroye canal in 2004, one year before the Sulina channel was reopened to traffic. In the same year, an interview with a witness of the sinking of the Rostock began making rounds in Romanian press contributing to the theory that the sinking was done deliberately so Ukraine would get a pretext for build its own channel. A local Lipovan fisherman, watched the crew jump from the ship with their baggage only to see them walk a little further away and begin drinking. The fisherman got closer to them and could hear what they spoke as the crew was speaking Russian, even going as far as to say that he, the fisherman, heard them say that "the Romanians have no other way to pass". Indeed the Rostock sank in an extremely narrow portion of the channel which forced it to remain closed for 14 years.

🇲🇩✍️🟥🟩🟥 The first rounds of negotiations regarding the Transnistrian conflict took place today in Tiraspol.
🇲🇩 Deputy PM and head of the Reintegration Policy Bureau, Oleg Serebrian met with 🟥🟩🟥 the "Foreign Minister" of Transnistria, Vitaly Ignatiev. The meeting focused on various issues the respective locals on the informal border face on a day to day basis.
After the meeting ended, the next meeting should have taken place in Chisinau but the Transnistrian side hesitated, not being sure if this is a trap to detain and prosecute them. For now Ignatiev, did not specify if he will or will not go to Chisinau, calling the proposal "a not so convincing attempt to show us that the law regarding separatism does not apply to Transnistrian citizens".

🇷🇴❌🇪🇺🇺🇦—🇷🇴📰 R3Media | Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister, Bogdan Aurescu, said that the Romanian MFA will notify the EU Commission that it opposes any deepening and dredging of the Bystroye and Chilia Canals and that it opposes the inclusion of the Bystroye Canal into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
The Romanian MFA released a statement to clarify the "information" that appeared in the press. After requesting information from the Administration of the Danube Delta Reservation Biosphere and the Border Police, the Romanian MFA couldn't corroborate the claims made in the press about "work underway on the Chilia and Bystroye canals".
The statement continued by saying that Romania will "reiterate its position expressed already last year that it opposes the inclusion of the Bystroye and Chilia Canals in the TEN-T as its inclusion would break principles of international law and regulations regarding the protection of the environment". It also infirmed the claim that the EU asked for Romania's accord, noting that it asked for "an opinion".
This comes after last Wednesday, when Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Sorin Grindeanu, said that Ukraine begun dredging works of the Bystroye canal and passed on the responsibility for reaction to the Foreign Affairs and Environment Ministries. He added that "we have agreed on the transit of small ships on the Bystroye and Chilia canals, but only ships fit for shallow waters".

🇺🇦🇪🇺❌🇷🇴—🇷🇴📰 Puterea | Yet another "FUCK YOU" from Ukraine (and the EU).
On January 16th the EU Commission asked Romania for an opinion regarding the deepening of the Bystroye and Chilia/Kilia canals, an action which Romania previously stated very clearly it was firmly against.
Ukraine wants to deepen by 3 meters the Chilia and Bystroye canals which would effectively kill the Danube Delta as the other two branches would become devoid of water, destroying in the process a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Ukraine notified the EU Commission that it wants to deepen the canals and in return the EU asked for feedback from Romania because "The Chilia Branch that ties the Danube with the Black Sea represents the border between the two countries". While subtle, this clearly displays the intent of the EU, that is to allow Ukraine to deepen the canals it once prevented back in 2004 criticising it severely after warnings from the World Wildlife Fund, and two UN conventions on the protection and preservation of wetlands and the environment (more info here).
The same EU notice called onto the ministers of the Environment and Transportation for an opinion, but before these ministers could conceive an opinion as their ministries don't have any documentation on the impact made to the environment which a deepening of these canals would have, Ukraine already notified the EU that it had the accord of Romania and began works on deepening the canals, works which were reported by border guards.
The "agreement" of Romania was given by the Foreign Minister, Bogdan Aurescu, which last July signed his consent to whatever Ukraine wanted to do with the Bystroye and Chilia canals. There is one catch, while he signed away this consent, it did not receive the approval of the Supreme Council for the Defense of the Country (CSAT) a council which reunites the government, president, commander-in-chief and the heads of the intelligence service.
Moreover, the EU notice also revealed that Ukraine plans to build a hydropower plant which unlike the deepening was not studied at all to see what impact it would have over the ecosystems. The deadline for the feedback Romania had to give expires on February 16th. So far, the Ministry of Transportation and the Environment didn't produce any documents, so the Romanian government didn't adopt any. Now the ball is in president's Johannis's court which has to quickly convene the CSAT and discuss what to do: damage your relations with the EU and Ukraine and protect the Delta and the international conventions Romania signed or destroy the Danube Delta for the sake of Ukraine.

🇷🇴💥⚡️ 315 aftershocks were recorded after the 5.7 magnitude earthquake that took place in Gorj County. Hundreds of people in villages have had their houses entirely destroyed or severely damage as a result becoming virtually homeless.
The head of the County Council of Gorj is requesting that the central government send experts specialised in the resistance of buildings as the county has only one such expert.
One reason the widespread damage caused by the earthquake is the relative safety from such events of the region. There has been no other earthquake recorded in the county in history,
The closest earthquake to the epicenter of this one was the 1991 earthquake in Băile Herculane, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake which damaged 615 houses and left no casualties. Băile Herculane is 78km west of Tismana, the closest town to the epicenter of the earthquake. Seismologists are working to find an explanation to the cause of the earthquake and establish if there is a future risk of a stronger earthquake capable to occur in the region.

⚫️ In Chișinău, the public debates are becoming increasingly polarised. Last week, two Russian MP, initiated a project that would illegalise unionism. Today, such legislation will fail to be adopted. After the 2024 elections, it will be hard to envision a situation where it will not fail as Maia Sandu's popularity and her party are at all time lows. The claim of a coup against her and the government only reveals her fear for the future. Moldova is in a constant state of emergency, like Ukraine, but unlike Ukraine, it is not at war and cannot justify this extension of powers by the government. Maia Sandu talks of a coup but she dissolves her own government without giving a clear reason. Now she is hurrying to create and pass those laws that are intended to prevent foreign funded coups. This will only increase her and /PAS/'s troubles and contribute to the polarisation of Moldovan society.

⚫️ In Chișinău, a storm inside a glass of water is unfolding. According to the president, Maia Sandu, the Russians plus a bunch of other neighbouring peoples are working for months to overthrow the legitimate government over the Pruth [Moldova]. A bad scenario, extremely hard to sell to the Romanian public which has witnessed since the 1989 Revolution on average "a coup" every 2 years so much so that it has grown bored. The circus in Chișinău likely has other reasons behind it. beginning with the great disappointment that Maia Sandu is, the poor economic and social prospects of Moldova and ending with a resurging pro-Russian sentiment in the polls, a sign that the reign of euroatlanticism is coming to end.
⚫️ The news of a planned coup launched by Maia Sandu without a single bit of evidence [...] may work for other countries but not for Romanians, where coups are occurring since December of 1989 without a sign of slowing down or stopping, The post-communist history of Romania begins with a semi-coup and continues with demented scenarios thrown by politicians to hide and draw away attention from day to day issues they were incapable to solve.
⚫️ Maybe the one and only real instance of a coup actually happening in January 1999 with the Costești "Mineriad", where we saw for the first time the state of emergency introduced and the first time talk of Russia trying to overthrow the government through politicians such as Corneliu-Vadim Tudor, but no proof was presented.
⚫️ In the '90s all civil unrest directed at the ruling FSN/FDSN/PDSR were considered by them as coups. This includes the alleged "neo-legionaries" with foreign funds attempting to overthrow them. In 2000 we had "assassination attempts" with biological weapons targeting president Ion Iliescu. In 2007 and 2012, each time president Traian Băsescu was suspended we had more "coups." The coups continued after Băsescu left. The Social Democrats were talking of a coup after the Ponta cabinet was forced to resign after massive protests following the Colectiv nightclub fire disaster, after it was discovered that corruption and gross negligence caused the death of 64 people. In 2017 both social democrats and center-right opposition were accusing each other of orchestrating coups against one another which culminated with the August 10th protest after which an actual investigation began looking into the supposed coup.
⚫️ After 34 years of coups, we can safely state that the perpetual never ending series of "coups" are a cornerstone of weak democracies incapable to solve the issues plaguing society. Romania and Moldova fit perfectly into this category, both full of governments and politicians periodically make claims of occult forces, usually, with the help of states carrying a visceral hate for democracy are always planning to overthrow the legitimate governments of these countries.
⚫️ This case is no different. Maia Sandu did not offer any evidence to support her claims. What she said is also extremely confusing. On one hand she claims the state already prevented several coups last autumn and on the other hand she talks of new attempts, some already in the process of being carried out, plans which were so secret that Zelenskyy learnt of them. The key to end these "coups" would be new laws which would make it easier for Chisinau to fight these external forces, laws which no one knows what their content will include.

🇷🇴🛩🏗 Beginning in 2024, a new terminal will be opened at the Iași airport, the T4 terminal with a capacity of 3.3 million passengers per year, double the capacity of the two other terminals combined.
To cope with the increase of inflow of passengers that will arrive at the Iași airport, 9km of new roads will be constructed which will give better access to the city and to a new cargo terminal that is added. The County Council of Iași has begun work in preparing the paperwork anticipating the construction.

🇲🇩🌹☭ PSRM 08.02.2023 | Two Moldovan MPs, one from the Socialist Party, the other from the Communist Party, ethnic Russians, submitted a proposal for a new law which would punish those that "want to adhere to a neighbouring state, to participate in foreign wars, those that deny the existence of the state's [Moldovan] language and the state itself [...] Today we are proposing a project that would punish any call to dissolve the Republic of Moldova or any call to unite with another state".
The law would give sentences for up to 9 years of prison time to those found guilty.

🌐🤝🟥🟩🟥—🇲🇩📰 Timpul | Acting head of the OSCE, Bujar Osmani, met with Transnistrian representatives in Tiraspol.
The key statement of his meeting was:
"Moldova should not promulgate its new law criminalising separatism if it risks breaking the status quo".
To this declaration, Chisinau reacted by saying that Moldova reserves the right to amend and improve its laws as it pleases and that such changes in no way impede the negotiation process. During the visit, Serebrian highlighted the importance of the synchronization of the EU application process and the Transnistrian resolution of the conflict. Serebrian informed that currently the 5+2 format is frozen as a result of the war in Ukraine as two of its 5 members, Russia and Ukraine, are engaged in a conflict with each other, but that dialogue between Tiraspol and Chisinau is continuing.
The deputy PM explained to mr. Bujar Osmani that a solution is not possible if Russian troops remain in Transnistria, implying that this condition, is something Chisinau will not negotiate. Oleg Serebrian then ended his statements by explaining to the North Macedonian official that Tiraspol is not a reliable partner that is constantly misleading foreign observers regarding the import of vital goods and its real intentions.

The boxers later complained that they were stuck for 5 hours in the airport after the border police took their documents. The boxers were in Chisinau to participate in an international competition.

🇷🇴🤝🇮🇹 Secretary of the Department for Romanian diaspora, Gheorghe Cârciu met with Giorgio Silli, a subsecretary in the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry, to discuss the adoption of policies which would improve the situation of the Romanian diaspora in Italy and to improve the image of Romania across its borders.
The Romanian side thanked Italy for the warm welcome Romanians received in Italy and the Italian side lauded the speed and level of integration into Italian society that was achieved by the Romanian minority.
There is an ongoing public debate in Italy whether to include or refuse to include Romanian under the bill 482/1999 which would allow for Romanian to be taught to Romanian students in Italian schools in order to prevent the denationalisation of the Romanian minority.

🇲🇩🎈⚡️ The Moldovan Civil Air Authority and Ministry of Defense give explanations for the sudden closure of the airspace in the country.
They report that over Soroca district at 12:30 local hours an unidentified flying object was picked up by sensors. Due to bad weather and poor visibility, the Moldovan MoD was unable to identify the object.
At 13:24 local hours, the decision to close the airspace and reroute flights to the airport in 🇷🇴 Iași was taken as the object was flying at 11k meter altitude where commercial aircraft usually fly out of fear of provoking an aviation catastrophe.
At 14:46 local hours, the air space was reopened after the object seemingly left Moldovan air space.
The object identified over Moldova is likely the same one identified later in Romania, a meteorological balloon that has run adrift.
The owner of the balloon is yet to be determined.

🇷🇴💥⚡️Two people reached hospital in Gorj County after the earthquake.
A man was hit by falling debris and a woman fell and hit her head in her house during the earthquake.
Its the largest earthquake to hit Romania in the last 5 years and happened in an area which was considered by seismologist as "a quiet and safe region".
A church was damaged in the town of Tismana, the closest to the center of the earthquake, causing debris to fall onto cars parked near it. Hundreds of houses and apartment buildings report either damaged roofs or wide cracks across Gorj County.

It fell to 27.3% from 30.2% in December from 31.4% in November.
The National Bank of Moldova estimates that yearly inflation will be at 13.7%, down 2% from its estimate at the end of 2022.
In 2024, the National Bank of Moldova believes the inflation rate will sit at 5.5%.

🇷🇴👔⚡️Romanian president, Klaus Johannis, hinted in a press release that the National Liberal Party (PNL) should remove Internal Affairs Minister, Lucian Bode, from his position as his continued presence in the government risks damaging the image of the party.
This was his first reaction regarding this development and is no way near comparable to what he used to campaign on reelection and election. He refrained from condemning the minister and using harsh words despite clear result of the commission which investigated the thesis.
A month ago, it was revealed that Lucian Bode has plagiarised his doctoral thesis which granted him undeserved financial benefits to his salary paid for by the taxpayer. Such an act is considered a crime under the L 8/1997 bill which states that plagiarisers can receive up to 3 years of prison.
Bode tried in to block the investigation of his thesis, even suing the university. He failed. He's just one in a series of ministers and PNL members that have plagiarised their theses some of which, including the PM, Nicolae Ciucă successfully managing to cover up suspicions and block any investigations into the legitimacy of their works.

🇷🇴🌹🔄 Sources say that the liberals want to backtrack on their previous accord with the Social Democratic Party and keep Nicolae Ciucă as PM until at least the autumn of 2023.
The news angered the president of the Social Democrats, Marcel Ciolacu, saying he was not informed beforehand of this and that he will not accept a liberal PM after June 1st 2023.

🇷🇴💥⚡️ A 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Gorj County, not far from yesterday's earthquake. Both earthquakes were felt as far as 240 km away.
The earthquake was felt in neighbouring Serbia as well. The earthquake occurred 40km underground west of the city of Târgu-Jiu, the capital of Gorj County, 5km NNE of the city of Tismana.
The Târgu-Jiu townhall was evacuated as two chimneys collapsed.

🇲🇩⚖️⚡️ The Moldovan Constitutional Court rejected a proposal signed by 34 PAS MPs which would've allow police and prosecutors to investigate and detain MPs without cancelling their Parliamentary immunity which prevents such occurrences.
The Moldovan Constitutional Court also declared unconstitutional the law passed by former Justice Minister, Sergiu Litvinenco and PAS MP, Olesea Stamate which created a "pre-vetting commission", a body designed to ensure the credentials of prosecutors and judges which were competing for the head of the Anticorruption Procuracy(PA), the Procuracy for Combating Organised Crime and Terorrism (PCCOCS) and the General Procuracy (PG) allowing the Supreme Court of Justice to overrule its decisions.
The pre-vetting commission was widely criticised by PAS opposition as being an instrument designed by PAS to sway the justice system in their favor in order to place PAS friendly prosecutors and judges in top positions of the justice system.

🇷🇸❌🇲🇩 Serbian FM, Ivica Dačić, is demanding explanations after the Moldovan president, Maia Sandu, stated that Serbian citizens are involved in actions designed to undermine the stability and the national security of Moldova.
The Serbian FM, asked that the Moldovan side share all information it has with the Serbian ambassador and in the communiqué Dačić said he was not informed beforehand by anyone regarding the involvement of Serbian citizens into such actions.
Earlier today, /PAS/ MP, Andrian Chetponar, claimed that a match between a Serbian football (soccer) team and a Moldovan one was to take place with the full participation of the Serbian fans. Russia was able to militarily and financially support this separatist revolt with the help of Ukraine under the same man who signed their nuclear weapons away to countries who were never going to respect the terms of the deal.

Out of 48k members, 1.3k responded with 1.1k agreeing that indeed the Transnistrian leadership should be prosecuted and imprisoned for separatism and conspiracy against Moldova, the rest disagreeing or not holding an opinion.

🇷🇴❌🪖—🇷🇴📰 Fanatik | The Romanian Army is suing national defense company, ROMARM, for the poor maintenance of its tanks.
ROMARM signed a contract with the Romanian MoD for spare parts and maintenance for its TR-85 "Bizonul" tanks, the most modern MBTs in the Romanian army. But an unfortunate and comical event during the National Day on December 1st 2019 in the city of Galați, where one of these TR-85 tanks lost one of its tracks while marching in the usual military parade.
The lawsuit was started immediately after the event in 2019 and as a result, the Romanian MoD temporarily send back its tanks to storage. The Romanian MoD paid 7 million RON for new tracks for its TR-85 tanks, tracks that happened to fell off.
ROMARM has the only factory capable of carrying out maintenance tasks on tanks in Romania, the Bucharest Mechanical Factory (Uzina Mecanica București). Last November, ROMARM won the lawsuit against the Romanian MoD but the decision can be contested.
Upon being contacted by journalists from Fanatik, ROMARM refused to answer and give more details about the lawsuit and the poor maintenance work inside its factories. ROMARM has asked in the past that the Romanian courts repeal HG 123/2002 which grants citizens a "freedom of information" request from companies or other governmental agencies. That lawsuit is sitting on the desk of the Bucharest Court of Appeals and will be solutioned this month.
In the meantime, its unclear what happened with the tanks and what is their state at the moment.

⬛️ The information was confirmed by the presidential administration of Moldova, the Moldovan Intelligence Services and two ministers gave more details about the plan. They were foreign minister, Nicu Popescu and internal affairs minister, Ana Revenco.
⬛️ "Over the course of last year, we've witnessed the failed attempts to destabilise the Moldovan government and the European path through various means including paid protests [...]" said Nicu Popescu,
⬛️ "The so called protests in autumn of 2022 were a part of the Russian plan which included but not limited to, the hundreds of bomb threats in the Moldovan capital, cyberattacks, massive propaganda and an unprecedented spread of fake news. They tried to hamper the supply chains and used migration as a weapon. All these were elements of Russia's hybrid war in Moldova applied in the last autumn. As you've observed, after the seizures the protests became fewer and farther in between until they stopped. Therefore, Russia's plan to change Moldova's democratic course failed but we are continuing to feel the effects of this hybrid war. Against us there is a informational war being led which wants to radicalise the society and its partially successful due to the incompetence of authorities. [...]. Here at the ministry of internal affairs, we are monitoring everything 24/7 through a command center. ⬛️ According to Mrs. Revenco Moldova's biggest threats at the moment are interborder organised crime and a risk of a new refugee wave. "There are many individuals seeking to profit off this war. Its about arms traffickers, drugs and people. We are recording a change from the usual. Arms trafficking has increased threefold at the borders. For the most part, Ukrainians do it. Drug trafficking increased 4 times at the Ukrainian-Moldovan border. Our goal is to stop these groups from turning Moldova into a transit hub for illegal substances towards Europe".

🇲🇩👔👨🦰 Who is Dorin Recean? What does his naming mean for Moldova?
⬛️ Dorin Recean finished his studies in economics with a licence in management of international relations at the Moldovan Academy of Economic Studies in 1996, following a master's degree at the Newport University in Belgium which he finished in 2000.
⬛️ In 2002 he began working for a telecom company as manager of marketing, sales and also holding the position of executive director.
⬛️ He held those positions until 2010 when he received a position in the government as deputy Minister of Technology, Information and Communication. In 2012 he would become Minister of Internal Affairs in the Filat cabinet, a pro-Western government. He would remain as minister until 2015 when he would leave politics all together after the 2014 Moldovan Bank fraud scandal.
⬛️ He would work after for various private companies as consultant and advisor and as a professor at the Moldovan Academy of Economic Studies and the branch of the Newport University that opened in Chisinau.
⬛️ In February of 2022 he received a position as presidential advisor of Maia Sandu in defense and national security matters, a position which he holds today, (he hasn't yet taken office as PM)
⬛️ The consensus in Moldovan media and political commentators is that Recean is a close friend of Maia Sandu and he would not challenge her decisions, unlike Gavrilița which hinted in the past that she would challenge the Moldovan president's decisions/wishes. The nail in the coffin for the Gavrilița government was the deal negotiated by ex Deputy PM, Andrei Spînu with Tiraspol over the export of electric energy, which Maia Sandu criticised for not being publicised enough. Although Natalia Gavrilița did not participate in the negotiation process she nonetheless approved it.
⬛️ At the time, the news caused a great deal of anger among people, not just /PAS/ supporters, anger which targeted Maia Sandu, anger that was seen in the polls which saw her popularity dip.
⬛️ What is clear is that the shakeup is intended to improve the image of Sandu, Recean is viewed as the more competent option, less focused on politics, less ties to politically motivated NGOs like the former government was. Therefore political commentators expect a more competent government, a greater push for EU integration and even closer ties with Romania, a harder stance on Transnistria and more controls of the political opposition. Political analysts also expect a decision soon regarding the legality of the Shor Party and even snap elections in the spring, or sometime after the Shor Party is banned in order for /PAS/ to increase its popularity and number in the Parliament.

🇷🇴🔎⚡️ The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) is investigating 90 cases of corruption related to the COVID-19 pandemic which saw hundreds of millions of EUR of taxpayer money dilapidated or embezzled.
The first of the cases to go public targets the chairman of ROMARM, the national defense company operating 15 armaments factories which bought 7 broken machines which were used in the production of facemasks in 2020 when theC COVID pandemic was in full swing.
The purchase cost the state 2 million EUR with 10k EUR going directly into the pocket of the ROMARM director. He then later produced and sold facemasks that were not up to the standards asked for the Ministry of Health regarding COVID-19 and for each contract signed, the director would get 40% of the profit. The masks were sold to various dubious companies which happened to be run by his friends.

🇷🇴☦️🇺🇦 The Romanian Orthodox Church spent over the course of 2022, 8.7 million EUR helping Ukrainian refugees.
The information was revealed by Patriarch Daniel, during the National Church Assembly (ANB) which includes a state of things report covering the achievements of the year that has passed.
His Holiness, Daniel, referred to the sum spent of charitable actions as a "sign of strong faith of the Romanian people and its hospitable and charitable spirit". The head of the Romanian Orthodox Church also took care to say that the report compiled by the Church includes the help offered by the Eparchies and the "Filantropia" Federation. The private actions of monasteries and parishes are not included.
7600 members of the Romanian Orthodox Church participated in organising tents and giving food and water to the refugees crossing over the border. The Church housed over 13k refugees, organised humanitarian transports and blood donation campaigns.

🇷🇴🗳🟨⭐️ President of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) George Simion said he "doesn't rule out campaigning for president".
The politician backed by the party which is currently polling either 2nd or 3rd most popular in Romania, added that he knows that his possible campaign will "carry the stigma of Corneliu Vadim Tudor" but that he remains hopeful that the Romanians learnt something from 2000 and "will not choose Iliescu" again.
For context, the 2000 presidential election saw two candidates face off, Corneliu Vadim Tudor, president of the Greater Romania Party, an outspoken nationalist with a strong anti-Hungarian stance, versus Ion Iliescu, former 2 times president, president of the Social Democratic Party, the latter winning the elections.

🟥🟩🟥🛑⚠️ Transnistrian authorities lied when they said that they removed the concrete barriers placed on roads acting as entry and exit ways for the people living in the enclave.
Investigative journalists checked to see if the Transnistrian authorities did remove the illegal roadblocks, which the Moldovan side asked for years to be removed, and discovered to the surprise of nobody, that the roadblocks were moved away from the street itself to the side of the road with some continuing to remain in place as they were last year.

Zelenskyy continued by saying that he immediately informed his counterpart in Moldova, president Maia Sandu. Later, the Moldovan SIS corroborated the information with its own reports.

🟥🟩🟥—🇲🇩 Why are these changes important, why is Transnistria irritated and why this does NOT mean the end of separatism in Moldova.
⚫️ Moldovan prosecutors now have more charges to bring to anyone residing in the separatist enclave. This in turn virtually cuts off all access with the foreign world of any and all Transnistrian officials as leaving the enclave now puts them at risk of being arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to upwards of 12 years in prison.
⚫️ Moldova did not ban Russian aircraft from entering its airspace but this risk in turn prevents Transnistrian officials from visiting their Russian allies.
⚫️ Still, Moldova already had 2 articles in its Penal Code which criminalised and punished members of paramilitary forces which could have been used numerous times against Transnistrian officials whenever they traveled to Russia or elsewhere.
⚫️ This time there is a reason to believe that things will change. First and foremost, Moldova now has Western support and garnered its approval for such measures, Oleg Serebrian the man in charge of the Reintegration Policy Bureau, having talked with the American ambassador about the modifications made to the penal code before they were enacted, assuring the ambassador that the changes will not sabotage the negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian War.
⚫️ Moreover, Igor Grosu, president of the Moldovan Parliament affirmed that Moldova already found its first targets to be tried and sentenced according to the new bill. On Jan. 20 2023, a 15 year old boy was returning home from Tighina/Bendery to Hagimus, a village outside of the Transnistrian zone of control when he was stopped by unidentified men in civilian clothes which restrained him, beat him, once a police car belonging to the Transnistrian militia appeared, they threw him inside it and detained him for a further 2 hours until the teenager's parents managed to get him released (video of the incident). The teenager suffered a concussion, a broken rib plus psychological trauma and was hospitalised . The unidentified men where confirmed to be part of Transnistria's Secret service which routinely intimidates and arrests dissidents of the separatist regime. They misidentified the teenager with someone else, this having been likely the one and only reason for the teenager's release. The case is currently under investigation by Moldovan prosecutors which are looking to identify the intelligence officers involved in the abusive arrest.
⚫️ /PAS/ member, Oazu Nantoi affirmed that Transnistria's so-called "Foreign Minister", Vitaly Ignatiev, can be arrested if and once he reaches Chisinau. Ignatiev once affirmed that the new bill would apply to everyone and anyone that carries a Transnistrian passport as it would classify as separatism or upholding a conspiracy against Moldova.

🟥🟩🟥❌🇲🇩 The Supreme Soviet of Transnistria reacted for the first time after the "separatism" and "conspiracy against Moldova" were introduced into the penal code.
The Supreme Soviet of Transnistria adopted a declaration affirming that "Moldova is to be blamed for spiking tensions in the region". The Supreme Soviet further characterised the changes to the Penal Code as "aggressive" and "destructive to the negotiations".
Furthermore, the Supreme Soviet calls upon the international community to assess the modifications and put pressure on Chișinău to revert them.
According to political experts, the virulent reactions from both Tiraspol and the Kremlin are a sign of desperation, a sign that the power Transnistria and the Kremlin wield over Moldova is waning.

⚫️ Moldova's biggest benefactors were the IMF, the World Bank and the EU, with the EU being the largest donor granting a total of 5.5 billion MDL in grants and loans or 272 million EUR. The World Bank gave 3 billion MDL or 148.3 million EUR in loans and grants while the IMF gave 3.25 million MDL or 160 million EUR in loans.

🇷🇴⚠️⚡️ A vote of no-confidence against Internal Affairs Minister, Lucian Bode, was initiated by deputies from Union Save Romania (USR). The vote failed at 90 votes for and 189 against.
The deputies cited as reasons for the vote the fact that the minister has plagiarised his doctoral thesis and as a result gained undeserved financial benefits and responsibility for the Schengen failure.

🇲🇩💧⚠️ Moldova is confronted with a looming water crisis as a result of the high prices recorded for electric energy.
Moldovan legislation currently allows electric energy distributors to cut off consumers if they haven't paid their bills. One of this consumers is state owned company, Apă-Canal Chișinău which has financial difficulties and is incapable to pay its bills.
The company responsible for supplying Chisinau, the Moldovan capital and other cities across Moldova with drinking water, has narrowly avoided being cut off from electricity permanently, having been disconnected for a few hours last week. The electricity is used to run the pumps used by the company to supply the Moldovan capital and other cities with drinking water.
The company blames the high costs of operating as the culprit behind its financial difficulties and is currently negotiating with PremierEnergy, its supplier of electric energy. So far, Apă-Canal Chișinău has agreed to pay for its bills but not the debt it accumulated.
Apă-Canal Chișinău also blames ANRE, the agency which sets the tariffs for the price of electric energy. ANRE had increased the prices in 2022 but Apă-Canal Chișinău did not increase theirs resulting in a large deficit which culminated last week when for 6 hours the lights were cut off in the main building of the company.
So far the government refrained from intervening in the matter all the while, opponents of the mayor of Chișinău, Ion (sometimes referred to as ”Ivan”) Ceban are blaming him for the issues and are asking the government to intervene and take measures to prevent the whole city from losing its water access.

🇷🇴🔥⚠️ 150 hectares of woodland are currently burning in the Danube Delta close to the port city of Sulina.
Firefighters are working to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) issued a statement reminding everyone that burning dry vegetation is illegal in the Danube Delta as it could have devastating effects over the ecosystems and the inhabitants of the region.

Funny to hear the guy that virtually killed support for the EU and NATO in Moldova speak of EU integration.
Before becoming PM, support for EU integration was between 75-80% in Moldova. It dropped to 36% after his tenure as PM. Support for NATO was at around 40% and dropped to 20%. Why? Because of the Moldovan 2014 bank fraud scandal which saw 3 oligarchs (Vladimir Plahotniuc, Veaceslav Platon and Ilan Shor), steal 12% of Moldova's GDP, 1 billion USD, from 3 banks bankrupting them in the process and running away with the savings of a couple hundred thousand Moldovans. All 3 escaped prison, Plahotniuc and Platon having had their charges dropped by former president, Igor Dodon under dubious circumstances, and Ilan Shor, managed to self exile himself to Israel, having held a Jewish passport and citizenship. All three kept their money, up until this year when Shor and Plahotniuc had sanctions placed by the US. EU, the UK and eventually, Israel froze Ilan Shor's assets.
Vlad Filat, allowed them to escape justice. He himself was the target of investigations having been arrested twice after but was nonetheless freed and had his charges dropped.
Worth noting that Maia Sandu used to be a member of PLDM leaving after the scandal. A few years would pass until she would form /PAS/.

🇲🇩🤝🇷🇴 Ex Moldovan PM, Vlad Filat, former leader of PLDM, a pro-Western, pro-Romanian Moldovan party, went on a tour in Romania where he met with important political figures such as president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolacu and Mihai Daraban, president of the Romanian-Moldovan Chamber of Commerce taking his time to encourage Romanian businesses to continue investing and to expand into Moldova. During his visit, the former premier of Moldova found time to speak to Romanian news outlets.
🟥 In one of these interviews, Vlad Filat said: "Moldova won't survive for long and I am well informed on this matter. Moldova doesn't have a lot of time left. Looking at the demographical and economical situations things are very bad and are going to get a lot worse".
🟥 "By looking at what is happening in Ukraine and how everything started there, we have only one option left. Reunification. Until the official act of reunification, first we must unify and integrate the legislation of our countries, the institutions, the infrastructure. This will happen eventually. It depends on us. I think it has already begun but in a disorganised manner and extremely inefficient."
🟥 "This will not be a repeat of 1918 when the official union came first and later did the reintegration of Bessarabia into Romania begin. Now this official union, or act of union, will come last as such a project must have the support of all political formations for it to happen. This is why we must unite the institutions, the legislation, connect the infrastructure so that until the day comes, the union will not be avoidable or require much of an effort to complete".

The Romanian PM mentioned that until natural gas extraction in the Black Sea begins in the 2nd half of 2023 only to expand further in 2026 when other deposits in the deep sea are exploited, Romania wants to cover its consumption with LNG coming from Egypt through its Mediterranean terminals.

🇷🇴⛽️❓🇷🇺—🇷🇴📰 Profit | Romanian refineries need to look for alternative sources in 2023 for diesel fuel as 80% of it came from Russia.
In the first 9 months of 2022, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) 1.85 million tons of diesel fuel were imported, 1.25 million coming straight from Russia. In 2021, 1.79 million tons were imported with 1.3 million coming from Russia for the first 9 months of 2021.
Even if 2022 saw a decrease in diesel fuel imports from Russia, Romanian customers paid 1.3 billion EUR, a sum 69% larger than the one paid in 2021 which stood at 770 million EUR. In 2021, Romanian buyers paid 920 million EUR for diesel fuel which still remains 400 million EUR under the amount paid for the first 9 months of 2022.
On top of this, Romanian buyers now also cannot buy diesel fuel from Bulgaria, Czechia, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia as they have been exempt from the latest EU sanctions on Russian energy. Previously these countries also consisted of a source of imports for diesel fuel of about 0.25 million tons in 2022.
Romania exports 0.87 million tons of diesel fuel but most of it goes to neighbouring countries especially Moldova, where Romanian firms own gas stations and more recently, to Ukraine.
The largest oil refining company in Romania, OMV-Petrom, which refines 2/3 of domestically produced oil and 1/3 consisting of imports, claims that it has already diversified its sources naming regions such as India, the Middle East and North Africa as its new sources.
An important question that remains unanswered is the fate of the Petrotel refinery, owned by Russian oil refiner, LukOil which announced its exit from the Romanian markets last year. The refinery primarily relied on Russian oil and diesel fuel imports which have now become unavailable.

🇷🇴🌾📉—🇷🇴📰 Mediafax 07.01.2023| The largest fertilizer producer in Romania has reduced its activity to the bare minimum.
The Azomureș plant is the biggest fertilizer producer in Romania having produced 1.6 million tons of nitrogen based fertilizers in 2021. 75% of the output is destined for Romanian farmers the rest being exported to foreign consumers.
As a result of the volatility of the natural gas market, the company has been steadily decreasing its output throughout 2022 reaching a full stop for 4 months in summer and early autumn of 2022 renewing its activity during the winter but at a significantly smaller scale. The loss of the output will impact Romanian farmers significantly this year as they will have to rely on imported fertilizer this year in 2023.
The parent company, Ameropa Holding, based in Switzerland, is attempting to cut its losses and still remain in the fertilizer market in Romania, having created Ameropa Biotech, a new company specialising in the import and distribution of fertilizer.
Ameropa Holding is a large investor into Romanian agriculture owning besides Azomureș, the more fertilizer and seed distribution companies in Romania, Promat Comimpex and Agroind Cauaceu. In 2012 Ameropa bought the Chimpex operator terminal in Constanța, spending a further 44 million EUR to modernise and expand the terminal in 2014.

🇷🇴🤝🇦🇿—🇪🇺📰 EURACTIV |Romanian state-owned company Romgaz and Azeri oil and gas company Socar will sign a new contract for the delivery of natural gas on Friday.
Azerbaijan delivered the first quantities of natural gas to Romania in January, and the two state-run companies will sign a contract for new deliveries starting with April, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday after a meeting with his Azeri counterpart, Ilham Aliyev.
Romania will continue to work with Azerbaijan on multiple energy projects, such as the Southern Gas Corridor – an EU initiative to secure a natural gas supply route from Caspian and Middle Eastern regions to Europe – and on the submarine power cable in the Black Sea that works to deliver green energy produced in the Caucasian region.

🇷🇴🤝🇪🇬 Romanian prime-minister, Nicolae Ciucă, traveled to Egypt to discuss the bilateral economic ties of the two countries.
In Cairo, he was greeted by Egyptian prime-minister, Mostafa Madbouly, after which they discussed a deepening of economic ties between the two countries. The Romanian official proudly stated that the value of Romanian—Egyptian trade is worth 1.1 billion USD and discussed plans to further integrate Egypt with the EU economies.
Egypt, on its part, is looking to secure a reliable fertilizer supply from Romania and additional grain exports from the country. Green and other sustainable forms of energy were discussed.
The Romanian PM has also a planned meeting with Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah el-Sisi and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tarek El Molla, with projects regarding energy on the agenda of both meetings.

🇪🇺🤝🇺🇦 The EU—Ukraine summit has taken place where Ukraine's EU membership path and actual negotiations were discussed with the EU's top officials.
Because this channel is focusing on all things related to Romania, the only thing worth to mention is that, regarding the status of the ethnic minorities in Ukraine, both the EU and Ukraine "reiterated the commitment to defend the status of said minorities as stated in the UN and Council of Europe conventions on human rights and other affiliated legislation".

🟥🟩🟥✅🛂 Transnistrian authorities have removed the concrete barriers placed on roads exiting and entering the separatist enclave.
The improvised barriers were placed last year in April after a series of yet unclaimed terror attacks in Transnistria on the building of the so-called Ministry of Internal Affairs and an important radio tower in the region.

🇷🇴📊🗳 New election poll reveals the voting intentions of Romanians for the 2024 presidential elections.
The favorite candidate of the scenarios elaborated by the consulting firm, is Mircea Geoană current Deputy Secretary General of NATO, pro-American, followed by Laura Codruța Kovesi, current head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, pro-EU and lastly, George Simion, a conservative, nationalist figure, leader of AUR, a supporter of the Visegrád Group and the Intermarium idea.
Regarding political preferences, according to Atlas Intel, AUR has surpassed PNL, the party of the PM and is just 7% behind the biggest party in Romania, the Social Democrats (PSD).

🇷🇺❌🇷🇴🇵🇱 Russian General Yevgeny Buzhinsky said NATO air bases would become a justified target of an attack if used by Ukrainian forces; he listed bases in Poland and Romania.
Russian propaganda is not idle. The possible aircraft delivery was mentioned by Yevgeny Buzhinsky, a Russian general and former chief of the international cooperation department at the Russian MoD, who threatened that “NATO airbases would become a justified target for Russian forces if made available for Ukrainian jets.”
“If NATO countries decide to involve their air forces, they could start operating from nearby NATO airbases, in Romania and Poland, for example,” continued Buzhinsky, adding that airbases “become a target that can be defeated legally from the viewpoint of international law.”
French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Monday that France does not rule out the possibility of delivering fighter jets to Ukraine. He said the criteria for doing so would be that such armaments must be needed by Ukraine, it must not weaken the French army’s defense capabilities, and it must not escalate the war with Russia.
He stressed that Ukraine had not yet requested the donation of jets and a decision on the matter would be taken based on formal motions instead of rumors.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that Poland is consulting with allies on further Ukraine aid and did not exclude the possibility of donating aircraft to Kyiv. President Joe Biden, however, said the U.S. would not donate F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

🇷🇴🛳⚡️ Romanian authorities are reviving an old project from the communist era which aims to continue the canal started by the former communist regime which would link Bucharest with the Danube river turning the Romanian capital into a port and accessible to river transportation.
Ships coming from Amsterdam or the Black Sea could one day stop in Bucharest, or at least that's what the Romanian government hopes. The project so far includes the construction of 3 new ports and 7 new pound locks.
Authorities estimate that in one year time they will know the state of the canal which is 70% complete, after being abandoned with the fall of communism, and are hoping to start construction and repair works after the maintenance check is completed.

🇭🇺🟦🟥🟨❌🇷🇴 The Committee for the Independence of Transylvania, Partium and Banat has sent a letter to Romanian president Klaus Johannis notifying the president that the Committee does not recognise Bucharest's authority over Transylvania.
The president of the organisation, Laszlo Szokocs, currently residing in Vienna, Austria, claims he's representing the voice of the people of Transylvania, Banat and Partium and that beginning January 25h 2023, the Romanian government rule over Transylvania has become "illegitimate" and "it shall be forced to cooperate" with the new "Provisional Government of Transylvania, Partium and Banat in order to hand over the administration on June 15th 2023".
He calls on all Transylvanians to take to the streets on June 4th 2023 to demand independence claiming that "Transylvania has the right to self determination".
Besides the letter, Mr. Szokocs gave an interview further elaborating on his "declaration of independence". He refers to Romania(Bucharest) is exerting an "authoritarian rule" over Transylvania having, in his words, "outstripped Transylvania's autonomy in 1920" and "refusing to negotiate with it ever since". Szokocs believes that Transylvania has the right to self determination "just like the other Eastern European nations that gained independence in the last 33 years". He envisions a country "just as good as Switzerland" where "the people can prosper, to have faith in each other and to forget the meaning of impossible".
In his interview he also mentions that Transylvania will be reorganised into 16 cantons seemingly taking inspiration from Switzerland, a country he cited as a model.

⬛️ The fact that the "Maia Sandu — Romanian president" scenario made it on a news outlet belonging to the German state hints that Germany very much likes Maia Sandu and is on board with a possible Romanian—Moldovan union.
⬛️ Germany is worried about the prospects of the 2024 presidential elections in Romania which pose the very real risk that a pro-German candidate WILL NOT win the race. Since 2014 Germany enjoyed the unconditional support of Klaus Johannis which acted always according to German interests not once breaking this rule. Johannis is on his way out and cannot campaign for a third term as he is blocked by the Constitution and after numerous political crises in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 affected his image negatively in the eyes of the public especially the last political crisis which saw his support go below 20%.
⬛️ It is safe to assume that Romanians generally are sick and tired of this man and his pro German stance that didn't result in much at all, Schengen being just another failure in a long line of other failures. That is why Germany is worried about this as Romania is the only country in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe without a soft anti-German stance.
⬛️ Germany won an important ally in /PAS/ and Maia Sandu and as we have seen, is actively supporting /PAS/ in gaining control over the Justice system in Moldova. /PAS/ has managed to place allies in the Office of the Prosecutor General and the Anticorruption Procuracy with PCCOCS remaining the last piece of the Justice system of which they do not have control over. This is just one step of the larger consolidation process of (neo)liberalism in Moldova which currently is in charge of most institutions.
⬛️ Seemingly with Moldova under firm control of pro-German politician, Germany now fears that it could very well lose Romania as a friend as, so far, the candidates proposed for presidential office are not necessarily pro-German but pro-American maybe with one exception, that being current European Chief-Prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, Laura Codruța-Kovesi. Hence why, Germany is hijacking the longstanding desire of Romanians to return Bessarabia back to the motherland to preserve their influence over Romania, gain access into regional groupings such as the Three Seas Initiative of Poland which is intended to defend Eastern Europe from both Russian and EU (German) meddling (supported by the US and UK) stamp out the chances of any nationalist takeover of the government by completing major goal of the nationalist movement (that is the union) and by pure coincidence, stamp out Russian influence in the region all at the same time.

🇲🇩⚖️❓In 2020 and 2021, Maia Sandu and /PAS/ campaigned on a promise to reform the justice system and stamp out corruption. Since taking office in 2020 and beginning in 2021 when /PAS/ won decisively a majority in Parliament, her justice reform has caused much controversy inside Moldova.
From the scheming done by justice minister, Sergiu Litvinenco to elect Veronica Dragalin as the head of the Anticorruption Procuracy (PA), now Veronica is criticising /PAS/ for insinuating that the PA has corrupt prosecutors calling for an extension of powers to the PA and that /PAS/ stop going on TV and spreading "unfound" claims of corruption inside Moldova's institutions.
Moreover, for over 3 months, PCCOCS, a special agency subordinate to the Prosecutor General's office specialising in crimes regarding organised crime and terrorism, is without a boss, for which a competition organised by the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) the body which elects the Prosecutor General and the heads of PCCOCS and PA, has been postponed, cancelled or derailed many times seemingly as the result of political battles between various interest groups. Just today, the board which was to oversee the candidates which aimed to become the new head of the PCCOCS resigned after rejecting all the candidates that have applied for the head of PCCOCS, making CSP to consider removing the whole process, something which justice minister Sergiu Litvinenco, wanted anyways but nonetheless, it rejected this proposal preparing for a new session of the exam used to select the head of PCCOCS.
The controversies don't stop here. One of the board members, Iulian Groza, the head of the Institute for Reform and European Policies, a pro-western NGO funded by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung foundation (KAS), put by Maia Sandu on the board, had illegally accessed the private information of Eugen Rurac, one of the candidates that applied to become the new head of PCCOCS. Iulian Groza also reportedly sent this information to the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung NGO and together with the almost unrestricted access to personal data of Moldovan officials and even state secrets represents a serious national security risk but both the SIS (Moldovan Intelligence Service) and the PG (General Procuracy) have not taken action against Groza.
Maia Sandu is a good friend of KAS and has made a partnership with the NGO back in 2021 not even a month after taking office, for "counselling", paid straight out of the Moldovan taxpayer's money but the purpose of the counselling is not clear, the list of the names and general information of the councilors has not been made public drawing up accusations that Maia Sandu is deliberately leaking state secrets and other sensible information to the German government which happens to be KAS's main source of funding and a good friend of /PAS/. KAS received direct permission from Maia to access classified information of the presidential administration in order to "carry out their analysis" and "improve their evaluation and logistics of the projects they are tasked with as a result of their contract for counselling".

🇷🇴🧠⚡️The Minister of Research, Innovation and Digitization, Sebastian Burduja, announced the creation of a "governmental cloud" a database storing the private and sensible identities of the Romanians which governmental agencies and citizens will be able to access and use in order to reduce time spent when paying taxes, receiving documents, depositing documents etc.
Burduja assures everyone that the cloud will be placed in a "secure area" and will be safeguard at all times the private data of citizens. By 2026, he hopes that over 30 government agencies will be connected to the cloud making it easier for citizens to work with the state from home on the internet.

23 February 1932 — The massacre of the Olănești forest. 40 Romanians were killed by Soviet NKVD and border units while attempting to cross the Dneister river into Bessarabia. They were "Moldovans" from the Moldovan ASSR and tried to reach their brothers in Romania proper unhappy with the socialist "paradise" of the USSR. This was just one of the many tragic events surrounding the Soviet-Romanian border during the 1920s and 1930s as reported by contemporaries, gunshots sounding in the night on the Soviet side were all too common. At first, the Red terror targeted the intellectuals of the Romanian community, after they were gone, it began targeting the native Romanians. Why? Because just like many of the USSRs ethnic minorities they opposed the aggressive collectivisation of their lands. This massacre unlike the others, made international news at the time but nothing could be done to stop the Soviet regime from stopping its extermination campaign which would later culminate with the Holodomor.

Reminder that around half of all Moldovans own a Romanian passport/ID card with a significant number of Transnistrians, including, Vadym Krasnoselskii's wife.
A conflict there would result in casualties, with Romanian citizenship and this would force Bucharest to take action somehow + generating a new refugee crisis these thoughts alone besides the economical impact and having to possibly organise a mobilization of some sort are enough to dissuade Romania from supporting an attack on Transnistria.
The US of course doesn't want to get dragged by its ally into a conflict with Russia as a result of the inevitable spillover that an attack on Transnistria would cause.
