The bar-chart provides information on population changes of Iceland in terms of age-groups over 30 years.
Overall, while figures for 65 and over and 25-54 year olds rose, Iceland saw falling trends in the proportion of population from other age groups. In any of the given years, 25-54 year olds made up the greatest proportion of the population of Iceland.
In 1990, Icelandic population was mostly younger , with the ratio of younger population being significantly higher than that of older. This was reflected in the fact that 25-54 year olds accounted for just over 30% and 15-24 and 0-14 year- olds constituted around 25% each, while in total of about 25% of the population were older people aged 55-64 and 65 or over.
The most noticeable change was in the case of 25-54 year-olds whose share rose significantly reaching a high of almost 50% in 2020. By contrast, the proportion of the young population 15-24 and 0-14 fell gradually to approximately 8% and 18% respectively. Meanwhile, the figures for older age groups remained relatively stable throughout the period.
