"Do you know what scares me?" she asked, looking at the sky. Then she continued without even waiting for an answer. "It's for me to reach my dreams and still be unhappy."
I looked above, too, and something about the stars made me feel sad. Was it the gray clouds or the seemingly sad orange-and-red sky?
"I mean, my dreams are a big part of who I am," she continued, pulling me off my silent musings. "A lot of things that I do, I do so I could reach my dreams. And I dream big because I want the beautiful things I have in my head to become a reality. After all, they say that nothing is impossible if we don't give up. But I guess no one ever talks about what to do when you reached your dreams and you find out that after all this work, effort and time, it's not what you really wanted."
I didn't know what to say so I just held her hand, but we were silent for a long time and somehow, I knew I had to say something. So, with a deep breath, I looked at the stars one more time and voiced out the words which I learned to be true.
"Then dream again," my voice was so low it was almost a whisper, but I knew that she heard it. "Again and again. Don't stop, just look at the stars and count them. That's what I do. That's the number of shots you got at happiness."
She looked at me, eyes swimming in tears. "But what if I get tired?"
I squeezed her hand. "Then take a rest. Look around you. Look at how many people live a mediocre life and still shine like the sun. Look at how they still smile like each day is a day to celebrate, and it really is! Every day is one of those stars. Every day is a shot to be happy. So dream, again and again, until you no longer feel like dreaming because for once, you feel complete. That day will come but until then, keep walking. Keep dreaming."
She softly rested her head on my shoulder and we both gazed at the countless stars above us.
"Will that day really come?" I heard her say, though it sounded like she was merely asking herself.
"I promise you, it will." I answered, anyway.
