Mick Lynch, leader of British transport union RMT, showed what solidarity looks like by joining postal workers at their strike rally.

Lynch called on working people to launch a "wave of action" against billionaires and big corporations who are driving down wages as the cost of living soars.

The union leader showed up at the rally organised by postal workers as 115,000 of them went on strike - the biggest of the year so far - amidst what has been dubbed a "summer of discontent" by unions and activists, with the British government and corporations facing a wave of protests and strikes organised by workers across multiple sectors that show no sign of abating.

Meanwhile, a coalition of campaign groups launched the "Cost of Living Action" initiative, that aims to join up the array of strikes and protests and calls for the formation of local assemblies to coordinate the actions.

The devastating floods in Pakistan highlight how Pakistan is at the epicenter of the climate justice crisis. More than 1,000 people have been reported killed and 1,500 injured by massive floods in the northern city of Nowshera.

The floods have been exacerbated by extreme weather and the melting of Pakistan’s 7,532 glaciers due to global warming. Pakistan has more glaciers than anywhere in the world outside the polar regions.

The recent death-toll shows the terrible price Global South countries like Pakistan are forced to pay for the extractivism and carbon-emissions of industries headquartered in the Global North. While Pakistan contributes just 0.67% of all global carbon emissions, the US accounts for 11%.

On this day, the Black civil rights pioneer W.E.B. Du Bois passed away in 1963.

⁠Du Bois was a pioneer of the civil rights movement in the US, a long-time anti-racist activist, a socialist, and one of the US's most influential intellectuals of the last century.

⁠Not only did Du Bois fight for Black liberation in the US, but he also extended his support to anti-colonial struggles by helping to organize various Pan-African Congresses.

⁠Following a US campaign against Du Bois for his anti-imperialist and socialist beliefs, Du Bois renounced his US citizenship and spent the final years of his life in Ghana where he was a member of the Communist Party.

Amid growing fears of a right-wing coup in Bolivia, thousands took to the streets to support the ruling ’Movement toward socialism’ [MAS] party. President Luis Arce and MAS founder and leader Evo Morales participated in the protest.

Pro-government unions, indigenous and women’s organizations mobilized for the protest in the capital La Paz. The massive mobilization was called in response to “destabilization” attempts by the opposition, including a series of “strikes” ordered by the right-wing government in Santa Cruz.

The right-wing opposition couped former indigenous President Evo Morales in 2019 under the leadership of Jeanine Áñez. Anti-coup protests were met with heavy repression, leading to 32 deaths.

In Balochistan, approximately 5,000 people have been reported as victims of enforced disappearance by the Pakistani military over the past two decades.

A peaceful sit-in protest by the families of victims was held last month after Pakistani security forces shot at least nine Baloch men whom the families say were missing persons.

Despite unprecedented floods, the families have continued their protest for the past few weeks.

Pakistani media and local authorities remain silent about their struggle for justice. The family members say that they have not been contacted by government representatives, nor has there been any progress regarding their demands.

115,000 postal workers have walked off the job today in the UK's biggest strike of the year so far. This action, which will disrupt mail across the country all weekend, is the latest strike in what has been dubbed a "summer of discontent" by organised workers across multiple sectors.

Throughout the year the UK has been rocked by major strikes. From railway workers to criminal defense lawyers, the number of workers demanding dignified pay and conditions is gaining momentum. Meanwhile, the ruling right-wing Conservative Party is failing to prevent recession from looming amidst the biggest cost of living crisis in decades.

This week, criminal defense lawyers (criminal barristers) announced that almost 80% of the Criminal Bar Association’s (CBA) voting members, who want a 25% pay rise, have chosen to hold another strike from September 5, this time an indefinite one. More upcoming strikes are planned by postal, telecoms, education, health, port, railway and refuse workers.

On this day in 1825, Uruguay declared independence from the Brazilian Empire after a revolutionary group, the Thirty-Three Orientals, began an insurrection led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja.

While Uruguay became independent of Spain in 1811, it was annexed by Brazil until 1825. On April 19, 1825, the Uruguayan revolutionaries, reinforced by Argentine troops, crossed the Río de la Plata (present-day Argentina) from Buenos Aires and organized an uprising that allowed them to gain control over the countryside.

On August 25, 1825, representatives from the Banda Oriental— the east bank of the Uruguay River— declared the territory’s independence and its incorporation into the United Provinces of Río de la Plata (present-day Argentina).

In response, Brazil launched a war against them. The ensuing conflict, known as the Cisplatine War, lasted for 500 days. The war resulted in the Treaty of Montevideo, which officially recognized Uruguay as an independent state in 1828.

Thousands of South African workers marched on the streets of Pretoria to demand a higher minimum wage and improved labor policies.

The workers, unionized under the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU), are demanding government action to tackle the sharp increase in living costs while working conditions and wages continue to deteriorate. Protests were also fueled by Cyril Ramaphosa's government's refusal of a minimum wage increase while giving the president and his ministers a 3% pay raise.

On this day in 1960, the Federation of Cuban Women was founded, just 12 months after the victory of the Cuban Revolution. Since 1960, Cuban women have legalized abortion, criminalized gender discrimination, and currently represent over 60% of university graduates, 70% of professional workers and 53% of MPs.

Vilma Espin, co-founder and president of the FMC, introduced the “Cuban Family Code” of 1975— a law mandating that men must share housework and childcare duties with their wives or risk facing penalties.

Police forces raided the Beykoz neighborhood in Istanbul, Turkey, to evict residents from their homes set to be forcibly demolished as part of ongoing gentrification of the area. Residents resisted the eviction, leading to intense clashes with the police.

Police forces fired rubber bullets and tear gas against the protesting residents who fought back with everything they could get their hands on, building barricades out of rubble and burning car tires.

Local media report that 238 houses in Beykoz are to be demolished to make way for “urban transformation”, aka gentrification, of the neighborhood which has traditionally been a working-class area. 110 buildings were already demolished last month.

Police forces arrested 27 protesters and dozens of residents who resisted the eviction were injured. Video footage shows police forcefully preventing journalists from reporting from the scene.

On this day in 1927, Italian immigrant anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were executed by the electric chair in Charlestown State Prison, Massachusetts.

The two men were framed and convicted for the murder of a guard and a paymaster during the 1920 armed robbery of the Slater and Morrill Shoe Company in Massachusetts.

The pair were convicted by flimsy evidence, a biased judge, and anti-anarchist fearmongering. Following their execution, Harvard law professor and future Supreme Court justice Felix Frankfurter would argue for their innocence.

On the 50th anniversary of the execution, Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis admitted that Sacco and Vanzetti were unfairly tried and convicted, adding that “any disgrace should be forever removed from their names.”

On the anniversary of the start of the Haitian Revolution, thousands took to the streets of the country's capital wearing shirts emblazoned with “independence”. At least one person was killed as anti-government protesters were met with excessive repression by security forces.

The protesters demanded the ousting of the interim PM Ariel Henry, over his failure to tackle soaring inflation and insecurity.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas and one of the poorest in the world. Nearly two-thirds of the Haitian population lives below the national poverty line of $2.41 per day. This summer, the country’s inflation rate reached 27.8%, the highest in 10 years.

The Caribbean country became the world’s first Black-ruled Republic after declaring independence in 1804, but it was soon forced to pay France "compensation", for the enslaved population that the Revolution freed. As a result Haiti to this day has been trapped under crippling debt that is responsible for the current economic crisis.

Turkey's attacks on the autonomous region of Rojava in northeastern Syria intensified over the last month. Only on one day between July 19 and August 18, there was no bombing, according to the Rojava Information Center [RIC].

On August 18, a Turkish drone attacked a UN-sponsored education center for girls killing four of the pupils and seriously injuring 11 more.

The Presidents of Iran and Russia did not give Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan the green light for his latest invasion of Syria, during their meeting last month.

Instead, the Turkish army, which is the second biggest in terms of manpower in NATO, constantly bombarded Rojava since the meeting. The RIC reported that in the same period, Turkey deployed more drones over Rojava's airspace than in the previous three months combined.

Between August 22 and 24 of 1992, a violent mob of German far-right extremists attacked an apartment block in Rostock-Lichtenhagen where asylum seekers lived, mostly Vietnamese immigrants.

The attack is considered one of the worst acts of mob violence against migrants in postwar Germany. The pogrom was accompanied by an applauding crowd of around 3,000 onlookers that made the attack look like a festival.

Neither the state nor the police intervened to stop the attackers, which was perceived as an invitation to continue the assault.

Hundreds of Filipinos came out on the streets of Manila to commemorate the death of former senator and opposition leader, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino. Aquino was assassinated during the brutal dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos 39 years ago.

Although the anniversary was made a national holiday in 2004, Filipino activists were outraged at the lack of an official remembrance yesterday by the new government of Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the late dictator’s son. Instead several accounts linked to the Philippines National Police smeared Aquino as a “communist terrorist”, falsely linking him to the Plaza Miranda bombing in 1971.

Aquino’s assassination lead to the People Power Revolution, a series of demonstrations and civil resistance against the Marcos dictatorship. The revolution ended in Marcos being ousted from power in 1986, after decades of political repression, looting of public funds, human rights crimes, and crony capitalism.

Today is the anniversary of Nat Turner's slave rebellion of 1831, one of the most important slave uprisings in US history, started and led by Nat Turner.

Nat Turner, an enslaved African-American preacher, on August 21, 1831 led a 3-day uprising of enslaved and free Black people in Southampton County, Virginia. Rebels, fighting for their freedom, went from plantation to plantation and killed around 60 slave owners.

The rebellion was ruthlessly suppressed in days and Turner went into hiding and was found hanged and skinned months later. As a result, white militias were formed and killed about 120 innocent slaves and free Black people.

Nat Turner helped destroy the white Southern myth that slaves were and should be happy with their lives. The rebellion of 1831 inspired several Abolitionist movements in their fight against slavery and was a significant event leading up to the American Civil War.

On this day in 1959, Hawai’i became the 50th US state, following a referendum organized by the US government to prevent Hawai’i from claiming independence after decades of colonization.

The ballot contained only two options to choose from: for Hawai’i to remain a US territory or for it to be absorbed into the US. Liberation was never an option.

Sri Lankan police fired tear gas and water cannons at students in Colombo, protesting the ongoing persecution of activists by authorities. At least 20 protesters were arrested, according to local reports.

2000 protesters took to the capital’s streets as soon as the crisis-ridden island nation lifted its state of emergency. The protesters carried banners with demands such as “Release all arrested protestors” or “Stop suppression.”

Following the uprising that ousted former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the new government under President Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency on July 17. During this period, authorities intensified their persecution against leading activists.

The country’s tense political situation developed out of Sri Lanka’s worst economic crisis since independence. Sri Lanka’s inflation rate hit a crippling 60.8% in July, according to figures from Trading Economics.

On this day 24 years ago, Bill Clinton ordered a cruise missile attack on the largest pharmaceutical factory in all of Sudan. Al-Shifa factory produced 90% of Sudan’s pharmaceuticals.

Its bombing led to a public health catastrophe with tens of thousands of people dying from malaria, tuberculosis and other treatable diseases.

The US claimed that the factory was producing chemical weapons and tried to link it to Osama bin Laden. When none of this turned out to be true, the US blocked a United Nations investigation into the attack.

Sudan has requested an official apology multiple times since the incident, but the US never expressed regret nor paid compensation for the attack.

Thousands took to the streets of Khartoum, Sudan, once again to protest the ruling military coup. Protests demanding civilian rule have been ongoing since October of last year.

Authorities cracked down on the recent protest with water cannons and tear gas. Protesters can be seen throwing back gas canisters and blocking roads with burning car tires.

In early July, coup leader al-Burhan announced that the military would step aside to make way for a civilian government. However, no serious progress towards civilian rule has been made.

The severe violence by police and military against the anti-coup uprising has left 114 dead, including several children, and thousands injured since October 2021, according to the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors.

Iran was first sanctioned in 1951. Not because of nuclear weapons or war, but because its first democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mossadeq, nationalized Iran’s oil from the company known today as British Petroleum or BP.

Britain and the United States reacted by staging a coup against Mossadeq and replacing him with their ally, the Shah. Today is the anniversary of the 1953 CIA coup in Iran, which triggered a chain of events reverberating to this day.

Today marks 78 years since the German communist leader Ernst Thälmann was executed by the Nazis, ordered by Hitler himself, after 11 years of solitary confinement.

Since 1925 Thälmann was the Chairman of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and established the Antifaschistische Aktion or Antifa to resist the rise of fascism in Germany and Europe.

He was a two-time presidential candidate with the KPD, a key figure in the anti-Nazi resistance and organized to overthrow Hitler's government. In March 1933, the Gestapo arrested Thälmann in a safehouse.

After 11 years of solitary confinement, in 1944, he was transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp and shot under the personal order of Adolf Hitler. His body was cremated and the Nazi propaganda machine stated that an Allied bombing killed him.

Today is the anniversary of the CIA’s first successful coup d'état, the 1953 coup d'état in Iran, orchestrated jointly with British intelligence to overthrow democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh.

At the time, Mossadegh was praised as one of the most important figures of secular democracy and resistance to foreign colonial powers in Iran. After being elected in 1951, Mossadegh nationalized Iranian oil and implemented social reforms such as social security, land and wealth redistribution.

Nationalizing oil from the British created severe tensions with colonial and international powers. Intensified domestic tensions caused by the foreign pressure forced Mossadegh to resign on August 19, 1953.

A US-backed general formed a government that consolidated the Shah’s undemocratic monarchical rule in the country in close cooperation with the U.S. until the 1979 Iranian Revolution put an end to all that.

A survivor of a US drone strike in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province speaks of his nine family members torn from his life by the US military. The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan a year ago marked the end of the 20-year war.

The deadly drone strike killed Abdul Bashir's five sons, two daughters, and wife. The strike also claimed the life of his uncle's wife. Abdul's scar-covered body tells the story of countless civilian victims of the 20-year US war in Afghanistan.

US drones alone killed up to 10,067 people in Afghanistan from 2004-2020. Among them, up to 900 civilians, according to figures from the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

A decade after police gunned down 34 striking mine workers in Marikana, South Africa, thousands of workers, activists, and relatives demand justice for the “Marikana Massacre.”

Platinum miners had protested in 2012 on a hill near the mine to demand higher wages and housing. When police opened fire, it was caught on camera and broadcast worldwide. However, no one has been charged over the killings to this day.

The miners’ union’s motto for this year’s commemoration is “10 years of betrayal”. By no means have all the victims been compensated, and many are angry at the government for not prosecuting anyone.

Who has paid the highest price for the United States’ 20-year war in Afghanistan? Over 65,6% of all casualties are Afghan civilians or Afghan military and police units.

George Bush, the former US President who launched the invasion of Afghanistan, claimed in his war speech in October 2001 that “the oppressed people of Afghanistan will know the generosity of America.”

When the US pulled out of Afghanistan this month last year after 20 years of occupation, the war left at least 176,000 dead, according to conservative figures from Brown University.

Scenes of chaos and confusion erupted in Kenya over the hotly-contested presidential election results.

The head of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBD) declared William Ruto the winner. Opposition candidate Raila Odinga, has rejected the result and says he will now appeal the results at the Supreme Court.

It had been a tight race with Ruto facing veteran opposition leader Odinga. Outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta backed Odinga after falling out with Ruto, his Vice-President.

The election was framed as the dynasty versus the hustler. Kenyatta and Odinga are sons of Kenya’s first post-independence leaders. Whilst Ruto framed himself as the man for ordinary Kenyans.

What followed was one of the largest and bloodiest forced migrations in history, an estimated 2 million people lost their lives.

It has been 75 years since India won its freedom from two centuries of brutal colonial rule on August 15, 1947.

First the East India Company and then the British Empire ruled with violence, coercion and deceit pushing millions of Indians into poverty and disempowerment. But India paid a heavy price for its freedom.

Thousands perished in the struggle for independence and millions were killed or displaced during the partition that led to the creation of India and Pakistan as separate sovereign states.

Women are one of the most crucial supporters of the Workers Party's candidate Lula da Silva. Lula is polling at 58% among female voters, while Bolsonaro only reaches 16%, according to the Datafolha Institute.

Brazil is ranked 5th in the world for femicides, according to the UN. Furthermore, black women are the primary victims of violence in Brazil. 66% of the women murdered in Brazil in 2019 were Black, according to the 'Atlas of Violence.'

During the July War on Lebanon which ended 16 years ago today, Israel caused one of the worst environmental disasters in the history of the Mediterranean Sea.

Israel's airforce bombed Lebanon’s Jiyeh Power Station, leaking 30,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil into the Mediterranean and covering 170km of the coastline with a 10km-wide oil slick.

Israeli jets deterred firemen from putting out the fire at the storage units, causing the discharge of emissions to continue for 10 consecutive days. 25,000 tons of oil burned at the power station, producing a toxic cloud that rained oil.

The oil slick killed fish including the Atlantic bluefin tuna, a species nearing extinction in the Mediterranean, and threatened the habitat of the endangered green sea turtle.

On this day 16 years ago, hundreds of thousands of displaced Lebanese joyously drove en masse on destroyed bridges and highways back to their homes in South Lebanon, after a UN-sponsored ceasefire ended the 34-day Israeli war on Lebanon.

The 2006 July War on Lebanon, supported by the United States and executed by Israel, left at least 1,191 Lebanese dead, over 4,000 wounded, and approximately one million displaced.

Although Israeli bombardment devastated Lebanon’s infrastructure, a report by Israel’s Winograd Commission concluded that Israel failed to achieve any of its strategic objectives. “A semi-military organization of a few thousand men resisted, for a few weeks, the strongest army in the Middle East, which enjoyed full air superiority and size and technology advantages,” it read.

On August 14 of each year, the resistance in Lebanon celebrates this victory against Israel, having established a powerful deterrence against Israeli aggression which persists to the present day.

Happy birthday Fidel Castro, the iconic Cuban revolutionary and guerrilla leader born in 1926. We remember a historic quote from the speech of the Second Declaration of Havana, which Castro delivered at the height of the threat posed by US imperialism.

A million Cubans filled downtown Havana as Castro delivered the speech in 1962. The Second Declaration of Havana was Cuba’s response to the existing threat that US troops would eventually invade the island. The Pentagon was embittered by the total defeat of the first attempt to overthrow the revolution, the Bay of Pigs invasion.

Castro sent a clear message that Cuba was ready to defend its revolution: “Imperialism considered us helpless [...] now it begins to be terrified; 200 million Latin Americans in whom Yankee monopoly capitalism sees its gravediggers.”

Thousands of Brazilians in Sao Paulo are rising against the threat of a right-wing coup. The protests erupt amid fears that Brazil’s right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro won’t accept the October elections results.

Thousands gathered at the University of Sao Paulo, where the “Letter to Brazilians in defense of the democratic” was read, an anecdote to the “Letter to Brazilians” of 1977, symbolizing the struggle against the dictatorship.

Like former U.S. President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro warns of “possible manipulation” of the elections without evidence. In addition, the murder of a Workers Party member, the party of Lula da Silva, by a Bolsonaro supporter sparked fear of further political violence.

The left-wing opposition candidate Lula has a double-digit lead over Bolsonaro in current polls. Lula is supported by 47% of the respondents, Bolsonaro only by 29%, according to the institute Datafolha.

On this day in 1976, the Massacre of Tal al-Zaatar finally ended after more than 2,000 Palestinians were murdered at the hands of Lebanese right-wing Christian militias.

They sieged and shelled the camp for 53 days and carried out a military attack over 35 days. Lebanese forces blocked access to medical care and water for the injured, resulting in many civilians, especially children, dying.

Tel az-Zaatar was a collection of sixteen camps for Palestinian refugees with 60,000 people. The fortified, UNRWA-administered refugee camp housing Palestinian refugees in northeastern Beirut was the only Palestinian enclave left in the Christian-dominated East Beirut.

Following a ceasefire agreement, the day before the massacre, Palestinian resistance fighters were assured that they would be able to leave the camp along with civilians and the injured. But as they were leaving, right-wing militia groups started attacking and murdering them, mutilating corpses, and sexually assaulting women.

Lebanon's central bank ran a major Ponzi scheme for two decades — with the US and Europe's blessing — before it collapsed in 2019.

Joseph Stalin was released from prison in Sri Lanka following massive protests demanding his freedom. The Secretary of Sri Lanka's teachers' vowed to continue his fight against the government.

The union leader is one of the most prominent political prisoners in the ongoing crackdown on the anti-government uprising that ousted Sri Lanka's former president. Stalin is accused of violating orders during a protest in late May.

"The government is targeting every single protestor. Those who have occupied the president's palace, Prime Minister's palace, and the president's secretariats are getting arrested." – Commented Stalin on the new crackdown by the Sri Lankan military and police.

The uprising was triggered by Sri Lanka's worst economic crisis since 1948, exacerbated by the economic aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The inflation rate in July hit a crippling 60.8%, according to figures from Trading Economics.

Protests have once again broken out in Exarchia, Greece. Police forces fired tear gas at protesters, who responded with burning barricades.

The protests unfolded as construction work began to install a new metro station in the anarchist neighborhood of Exarchia, which activists see as a continuation of gentrification.

Big companies are buying up buildings in Exarchia to convert them into tourist hotels. The country's largest opposition party, the Alliance of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), has criticized the extortionate rent hikes that have happened as a result.

New Yorkers rushed onto the streets to protest the Israeli military escalation against Gaza and to defend the Palestinian right to resist.

The pro-Palestinian organization ‘Samidoun’ mobilized for the protests in front of NYC’s ‘Friends of the IDF’ headquarter, which collects donations on behalf of the Israeli military.

Protesters carried signs reading: “When people are occupied, resistance is justified” and “No solution on a capitalist basis!”

Over three days, Israel bombarded the Gaza Strip, killing 44 Palestinian civilians, including 15 children. Local sources also count at least 350 Palestinian wounded.

On this day in 1961, during the Vietnam War, the US Air Force started Operation Ranch Hand, during which herbicides were sprayed over Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia for more than nine years.

It is estimated that 19 million gallons of herbicide were sprayed during those years, 11 million of which consisted of Agent Orange, a known toxic and cancer-causing agent.

According to the Vietnamese government, more than four million people were exposed to Agent Orange. At least three million of them suffered illnesses directly related to exposure to the chemical, and 400.000 people died or suffered severe injuries.

The US did not pay compensation to any of the Vietnamese victims of the chemical weapons. In 2015, the US government did, however, pay 24 billion US dollars to 1.3 million US war veterans — almost half of the total US soldiers deployed during the war— who suffered from the consequences of exposure to Agent Orange.

Three Palestinians were killed during an Israeli raid in the occupied city of Nablus this morning, including Al-Aqsa Maryr’s Brigades commander, Ibrahim al-Nabulsi. At least 40 more were injured, Palestinian Red Crescent reports.

An Israeli police statement said they encircled the home of al-Nabulsi where the three Palestinian gunmen died during a two-hour shootout.

Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian ambulances and prevented medical teams from evacuating victims.

The Israeli attacks continue the ongoing escalation by the Israeli military. Over three days, Israel bombarded the Gaza Strip, killing 44 Palestinian civilians, including 15 children.

Indian police arrested dozens of Kashmiri Muslims for protesting the authorities’ ban of Muharram processions, held as the second holiest month for Shiites worldwide.

Many Muslims opposed the restrictions in parts of Srinagar and took to the streets to chant religious slogans. In the affected areas, stores were closed, public transportation came to a standstill and internet access was restricted.

Major Muharram processions have been banned in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir since 1989. In 2020, dozens were injured when Indian forces fired shotgun shells and tear gas to break up the procession.

Today is the birthday of Emiliano Zapata, the Mexican revolutionary leader born in 1879.

Zapata led a farmers' uprising that became the famous Mexican revolution. But, less known is that Zapata also led the rebellion of the rural workers' class and that he fought for socialist ideals like distribution of wealth and power.

Zapata defended social democracy and social justice with Lenin's model of revolution in mind, as the Russian revolution was then contemporary to the Mexican one. For instance, he imposed a fair distribution of wealth and power in the state of Morelos.

On April 10, 1919, federal forces ambushed and shot Zapata twice, point blank range, leading to his death. 75 years later, the Zapatista Army of National Liberation was founded in Mexico. Named after Zapata, the grassroots movement against inequality inspired global resistance to neoliberalism and keeps Zapatista's revolutionary legacy alive to this very day.

Hundreds of protesters in Bamako, Mali, demanded the withdrawal of UN “peacekeeping” forces from the west African country.

Mali’s transitional government has denied the rotation of UN troops in the country. In addition, the country expelled a UN spokesman last month. The UN’s deployment in Mali is one of its most extensive. By April this year, over 17,000 units had already been deployed.

The operation began in 2013 under French leadership, supposedly to support local authorities and stabilize the country. However, locals criticize that the UN mission is far from being fulfilled.

Mali has now severed relations with its former colonial power. Mali’s transitional government expelled the French ambassador in January 2021 and replaced French as the official language with Bambara.

UN "peacekeeping" troops in Africa are notorious for their extensive sexual violence. The total number of alleged UN sexual perpetrators across Africa adds up to 1336 from 2010-2022, according to the UN.⁣

The epicenter of sexual violence is the Central African Republic [CAR], with 621 alleged perpetrators inside UN troops. This resulted in 450 UN units being withdrawn from CAR in 2021.⁣

Sexual violence by UN "peacekeeping" troops has been a known problem for years, and its continuity proves the inability of the UN to combat it. A 2005 report by 'Refugees International' had already stated: "A 'boys will be boys' attitude in peacekeeping missions breeds tolerance for exploiting and abusing local women."⁣

Israel has once again unleashed a wave of airstrikes in Gaza, killing at least seven people, including a five-year-old girl. The militant commander Tayseer al Jabari was also confirmed to be assassinated.

Israeli Occupation forces had recently arrested a senior militant group member in the Occupied West Bank. Roads were immediately shut down around Gaza, and military reinforcements were sent to the border in fear of retaliation from Palestinian resistance groups.

The Israeli “defense” minister, Benny Gantz, threatened authorities were preparing “actions that will remove the threat from this region” without elaborating.

History shows that the U.S. have a record of utilizing Taiwan. In 1945 the U.S. supported the Kuomintang, who fled to Taiwan after being defeated by Mao Zedong and plotted to "reconquest" all of China.

At the peak of the U.S. global battle against communism, Washington recognized the isolated Kuomintang as the sole legitimate Chinese government in 1945. The U.S. utilized the Chiang Kai-shek dictatorship as a military base against Communist China. By 1958, nearly 20,000 US troops were stationed on Taiwan.

Only 13 U.N. countries maintain diplomatic relations with the Chinese Republic on Taiwan today. The U.S. have recognized the People's Republic since the 1970s but now violate diplomatic agreements with unauthorized meetings in Taiwan.

On this day in 1983, socialist revolutionary Thomas Sankara became president of Burkina Faso at the age of 33. He only lasted 4 years because he was killed in a military coup suspected to be backed by the US and France.

Sankara won the love of his people because of his socialist programs and economic prosperity, his confrontation with the national elite, Western imperialism and neo-colonialism.

In those 4 short years he:

• Vaccinated 2.5 million children against meningitis, yellow fever, and measles in weeks.

• Initiated a nationwide literacy campaign, increasing the literacy rate from 13% in 1983 to 73% in 1987.

• Redistributed land from the feudal landlords and gave it directly to the peasants.

• Appointed women to senior positions, encouraged them to work, and granted pregnancy leave during education.

• Called for a united front of African nations to repudiate their foreign debt, arguing the poor and exploited did not have an obligation to repay money to the rich and exploiting.

The private residence of APSP chairman Omali Yeshitela was also stormed by officers who threw flashing grenades into the house and handcuffed him and his wife. Again, the US authorities used alleged ties to the Russian state as justification.

At an APSP press conference following the FBI raids, spokesperson Eritha Akile Cainion said, "We can have relationships with whoever we want to make this revolution possible."

Moreover, she pointed out the notorious legacy of the US government's repression of Black revolutionaries: "This is the history of what this government does to people who struggle for their freedom."

On James Baldwin’s birthday, we remember his legacy as a ‘literary revolutionary’ and socialist. Born in New York, in 1924, Baldwin lived in the ‘worst poverty’ his school teacher ever saw. His Harlem youth became a central focus of his writings, in which he illustrated the racism and dire social conditions that many Black Americans were subjected to because of capitalism.

He moved to Paris in 1948, where he published his groundbreaking gay novel, “Giovanni’s Room” during the height of homophobic America, paving the way for scores of other writers who wrote about queer identity.

In Paris, his political consciousness expanded to consider the relationship between Black Americans and liberation struggles in the colonized world. He would later get involved in the Algerian independence struggle and become a champion of Palestinian freedom.

Baldwin was close to the Black Panther Party and promoted an “Indigenous socialism” that would be formed by, and respond to, the real needs of people living in America.

Today is the birthday of George Habash, the founder and leader of the militant Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a secular Palestinian Marxist and revolutionary socialist organization founded in 1967.

George Habash was shaped by the Nakba. He was born in 1926 in al-Lydd, Palestine, and his middle-class family, like thousands of other families, was forcibly displaced by the Israeli paramilitaries led by Yitzhak Rabin.

The PFLP was founded following the 1967 war when it became clear to Habash that liberating Palestine through Arab unity wasn’t going to happen.

They adopted the tactic of hijacking Israeli and western airliners to draw world attention to the occupation and to place the suffering of the Palestinian people squarely on the agenda of pro-Israeli western capitals and the international fora.

Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia reached a new high after Kosovo banned entry of citizens with Serbian documents. Gunfire and road barricades have erupted at border regions. The NATO bombing campaign of 1999 still fuels conflict between the former Yugoslavian nations.

In a press statement, NATO made clear to “intervene if stability is jeopardized” and that NATO forces “will take whatever measures are necessary.” In 1999 NATO bombed Yugoslavia into today’s status quo, the separate states of Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo.

According to some estimates, the NATO intervention took 2,500 lives and injured over 12,000. Although media claimed that only military spots were of interest, “collateral damage” killed scores of civilians.

It was the first time that NATO used military force without the approval of the UN Security Council and against a sovereign nation that did not pose a real threat to any member of the alliance. The bombings foreshadowed much greater wars and NATO-led interventions that followed.
